TomTom 6 takes the wrong route

when I drive from work home, TomTom 6 navigates very strange.
on a straight road it guides me right into a small road, turning left to stay 200 ft and turning left again to come to the major road back.
this doesn't make any sense.
the major road is shown on the map, so the road exists correct in the data from TT6.
any idea how to overcome such a bug?
I have experienced other bad routing as well, compared to the maps of my previous Dell Navigation maps.

Did you get a good fix from the GPS? Does it happen constantly?

What are your routing settings?

That may just be the shortest way to your home. It could even be the quickest using a mathmatical model.

I live just north of the old major road (state highway). There is new freeway just south of this road. The old highway is a 40 zone with long lights. The freeway is the QUICKEST way home when returning from the airport or downtown. But all the map software I have (Mapopolis and iGuidance) wants me to exit the freeway and take the highway. Snce it is both the SHORTEST and mathimatically the QUICKEST way.

So you are not alone.

A bit of background--mapping databases divide highways into segments. Each segment begins and ends anywhere there is an intersection. At each intersection, the database is linked to show all possible attached segments at that intersection. The display is based on the start/end of a segment. So, the phenomenon you see occurs when the segment is in the database but isn't shown as linking at one end or the other. The display shows the road, but the logic unit for routing doesn't think they are connected, so it routes around the "break" on the side road. No fix is possible by the end user, but you can report the error to the vendor and perhaps it will get fixed eventually.

this is how it looks

see here how the route looks like.
http://www.pbase.com/rbartl/image/70007120

I drive the black route.
red is what TT6 suggested.

the system definately takes the longer and slower route.
I have no idea, why it takes the detour.

also shown in red, is the initial suggestion from the system, to go all the way around the golf course, instead of the direct way on munger road.

Yep, the picture is consistent with what I explained. The dashed part of Munger Road has one end free-floating, not attached to the neighboring segment of Munger.

Not only a mapping error, but could also be TomTom may also be set for some thing like a "Major" road option.

Since I am assuming the RED line that goes around the subdivision is the first way TomTom wanted you to go. This could be the known major road, with a map error on the other route. Then when you turned into the subdivision, it recalcs finding the new best route again following the same rules along with map error, and way you bypass.

This is one reason I like 2D map displays over the 3D form, you can see more of the choices that you and it has to make from.

Have you tired to get TomTom lost in you own neighborhood? I have gotten my two softwares iGuidance and Mapopolis to tell me to drive away from where I was going by making a wrong turn and correcting by a U-Turn after the software had rerouted me.
