Need to buy GPS for X5 as a gift. Clueless!

I need to buy a GPS for a Christmas gift and I have some questions. I have a Dell X5 with Windows Mobile 2003.

1. Do I need to buy the CF card (Antenna) and software that goes with it? Or does the antenna come with software?

2. Which cards/software do you recommend? This is mainly for USA travel.

3. Are the GPS units for the Axim truly usable, or should I drop extra cash and get a stand-alone unit?

Thanks for your help.

hi!

1. this depends on the card you are getting. almost all of the time the anntena will be built into the card. or the antena will be included.

2. personally i recommend the Deluo GPS WAAS however it is a GPS mouse, not a cf card.

3. personally i would get a mouse. manly becouse you can use it with a deksktop pc (ie laptop, UMPC, tablet, ect) with a differnt adapter.

also you will need to get some nav software for it. this i cant advise on. i use ms streets and trips 2006 however it isnt really very good and lacks a huge amoutn of features that other gps have.

Thanks for the reply, but I am a total GPS noob and still confused. Let's keep this as simple as possible.

1. What is a GPS mouse? (I think it is a GPS unit that hangs off a USB dongle)
2. Can anyone recommend software that can be used on my X5 and/or my laptop?
3. Why do you like the Delup GPS WAAS over other products?

A mouse-type GPS is a receiver connected to the PPC by a cord - versus a CF (connects directly through the CF slot) or a Bluetooth GPS receiver (cordless - transmits via bluetooth signals). I'm guessing the X5 doesn't have bluetooth, so you can get a CF-based receiver or a mouse-type. Either should work fine - go with what your budget can handle.

2. I'd recommend iGuidance 3 for the U.S.

3. GPS for the PPC is very usable. One of the negatives compared to standalone units is that the POI (Points of Interest - restaurants, gas stations, etc.) database is usually not as large/comprehensive. But it's usually cheaper to get a GPS receiver and software if you already down a PPC versus getting a standalone.

I'm back armed with a little more knowledge. My Axim X5 does not have a USB port, so I cannot use a GPS mouse. I also like the nav software recommended in this thread. It has a ton of features, but still looks simple.

What GPS in CF form do you recommend?

Thanks.
