X50v with TomTom crashed during business trip

worse nightmare (well one of them) came true - I was travelling mid-state in US on business in a neighbourhood completely unknown to me and my Dell crashed, upon reboot - my TomTom software was uninstalled. Had huge trouble finding my way back to my hotel! Have printed off some mapquests for tomorrow's meetings. What can I do in future as backup? Is there a way to have the TomTom installation software stored on a CF or SD card? Or do you need to have a Laptop and cable handy?

Use a backup program like SPB Backup. I install virtually everything onto my flash memory except Pocket Informant, which is my PIM. Very simple solution.

Ouch. Now I know why CoPilot has the auto-recover option.

The first thing I do after a hard reset is to setup gps software, make sure they are configured properly then make a backup. I do this before installing anything else so that when a situation like that of yours comes up, I can get gps up and running in less than two minutes as opposed to several minutes restoring with all the other programs loaded. I keep my backup in SD just in case I need to do a hard reset.

Anything that stays on BIS is not deleted after a hard reset. So, if you use a backup software that can creates your backup of non-BIS files as an executable, if you end up having to hard reset your Axim, all you need to do is run the backup.exe and voila, everything is restored. The only requirement is to have your registration info handy when you restore the backup executable. I copy that info into a text file and copy that into my BIS. So it does not get deleted.

I use Sprite backup for this.
