Worried TomTom Navigator 5

I'm sorry if this has already been answered before but its all new to me, i have had my axim x51v for a short while and am still finding my way around. The problem i have is with a tomtom sat nav my wife got me to go with the axim. It has the wired GPS reciever and no matter what i do it says theat there is no device present. I have tried contacting PDA mods where i got the axim from but the information they are sending is very confusing and involve a bluetooth GPS device which i haven't got, i have tried their methods but nothing happens i just get stuck on the configer screen and the only way out is to cancel. Please can someone help me regain my sanity and get the wife off my back

Thanks

Welcome to Aximsite. You have a wired gps receiver, does it have the rj12 jack that looks like it's a phone cord jack? And, if so, do you have a powered gps mount?

Check this page out. This mount is powered, and if you press "Product Specifications" you'll get a picture that describes the jack I'm talking about.

Tomtom software has an option in the setup that allows for a wired gps. Did you choose that? If you don't know how to configure your system, do this:
1. At the bottom right of the screen where the 5 antenna bars are, press them
2. at the top right of the screen where the 5 antenna bars are, press them
3. press the configure button at the bottom left
4. choose either other NMEA gps or tomtom cable GPS and see which works
May the force be with you.

I have already tried both methods when i choose the wired option it just tells me no device present no matter how long it is left on, when i choose the other nmea option it shows me a screen to choose baud rate which i choose 4800 then a screen with Native IR:, COM3: BT UART on COM5, Se???a?? ?a??d?? st??. I sat with this screen showing for 1 hour the only way out is to cancel back to the configure screen.

Ok, we have to get our gps experts involved now. They are Jake and Lawman. I'm going to move this thread into the GPS forum and PM them so they are aware of your situation. I know they can help you.

From another thread:

Tom Tom5 with Axim x51v and Wired GPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I fixed the problem I was having with TT5 and the Dell wired gps on my Axim X51v. I found this on another board:

The problem is due to the corrupted serial driver name in the registry, that is why you see "Se???a?? ?a??d?? st?? COM1: " in Tom Tom GPS menu.

1. Use a registry editor, e.g. PHM Registry Editor v0.70
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities...ryeditor.shtml

2. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Serial

3. You will see the value name "FriendlyName" has some Russian characters for the value data

4. Change that to Serial Cable on COM1:

5. Make sure you exit registry editor from Tools -> Exit, that will save the changes properly.

6. Now go to Tom Tom and your wired GPS should be working. You may need to do a soft reset if Tom Tom is still not picking up your wired GPS.

Heres what I set my settings to in TT5(should be the same for all us dell wired gps + tt5 users): In TomTom 5 go to Show GPS Status: Select Other NMEA GPS, GPS baud rate:4800, choose Serial Cable on COM1. That should do it. give it a few seconds and it should see the satellites.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jake thanks for the help but now i'm getting stuck with the reg editor. I have managed to get as far as the russian characters then getting access denied when i try to edit them. I right click on them this lets me enter a new value for the string, binary, DWORD etc but whatever i try to change its the same access denied
when i press ok. I here its dangerous to edit if you are not sure what you are doing so i would appreciate it if you walked me through it step by step.

schueyfan,

editting registries is not a problem. if something screwsup, a hard reset will restore everything back to normal.

editting the registry to correct an old bug in AximX51v is required for using your serial device.

Look for other registry editors that will work and give you write access to modify the registry.

I use Resco Explorer (www.resco.net). You can also try that. Once you get the above done (as indicated by Jake's message), you should be able to get it working.

Would the registry editor also be used in trying to resolve the same problem w/ a BT (wireless) reciever as well? if so would you change the value to something other than Serial Cable on COM1. My reciever is functioning on COM8 but tomtom fails to recognize a signal.

Fantastic Post. Many thanks.

I've just got an X51 and had the very same problems but the above routine fixes everything. Thanks once again.
