When you say "press down on the middle of the cup", do you mean as I'm pushing against the window (pressing the whole thing against the window), or before I press it against the window (pressing on the middle of the cup, where there's a "button")?

Finally, on the "adhesive", while I know you're the expert, I'm certain it's adhesive because the thing came with a circular piece of release paper or wax paper, which I had to remove first. The paper itself was sticky, and there still seems to be residue on the suction cup. Of course I accept that these aren't supposed to ship with adhesive but it just seems so wrong! Guess I could/should try washing the residue off.

I'm tempted to get one of the aftermarket brackets for the speaker as much as anything, the PDA/GPS is nice and loud when hand-held but rather muffled in this holder.

Thanks again!

EDIT: I re-read what you said. There should be NO adhesive at all on the cup. If there is, clean it off gently with warm water and a little soap. Any foreign matter on the cup will kill the suction. Get all of it off the glass, too.

Once it's clean, press in the middle of the cup to make it "cuppier" or have a deeper depression before you put it against the glass. That way when you press and toggle the lock you'll build up a greater vacuum to hold it more tightly to the glass.

BTW, I've not heard of a suction cup coming with any paper on it. Some do come with an accessory for use if you don't want to use the glass. That accessory is a disk of plastic with a sticky back covered with paper and a smooth side for the suction cup to adhere to. You use that accessory by sticking the disk to someplace that is flat but not smooth, the using the suction cup to adhere to the disk. For the windshield or glass surface itself, you don't need the disk at all, and in fact it will probably work worse than just using the suction cup directly on the glass.

Thanks, it's clear I got a faulty or defective unit.

Since I can't hear the sound properly when the PDA is mounted in the stock holder, I decided I was going to end up trying a powered mount anyway. Ordered the Arkon and I'm quite happy with it! It feels like I could hang off it.

Thanks again!
