X% Mapping Software . . .

Hello!

I'm probably going to upgrade soon, but I'm trying to get as much use out of my X5 until I do. I'm looking for a reccomendation on mapping software. Here are the particulars, in case anyone can help:

1) I have Microsoft Pocket Streets, but it doesn't do exactly what I want. I don't drive, I'm in a city area, and I do a lot of walking. Pocket Streets is kind of cumbersome, and what I'd really like to have is a kind of START -> DESTINATION functionality like in Mapquest, that will generate a list of directions.

2) I don't have a GPS hookup, and probably won't bother trying to get one until it comes time to retire my X5. At that time, I'll get whatever the latest and greatest is, but until then, I'd just like to purchase one software package that does what I want. I load a map of my city, I feed in a start and destination, I get a 10-step list of streets and turns to take and that's it.

3) My Axim X5 is running PPC 2002. I might be able to find the Windows Mobile 2003 CD somewhere used, but if I could find software that's compatible with 2002, that would be simpler.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

-Doug

Ah, a little looking around on my part did the trick. Mapopolis does exactly what I want, and works very smoothly even on an old X5 running PC2002.

I've been interested in a map program also and was considering the Microsoft Streets. After reading your post I went to the Mapopolis site but it doesn't seem to be compatible with the X5 or any Pocket PC.
From their site:
Compatible PDAs: Palm Tungsten T3, T5, C, E2, Zire 72, LifeDrive, Treo 600, 650, 700p, Tapwave Zodiac.
NavCard requires a GPS receiver for dynamic navigation functions.

The NavCard at Mapopolis is not compatible with Microsoft platforms. Look instead at the Navigator and Platinum Map Packs. Note that you can also download the viewer application and a free demo map of your area to try it out for a week. The demo maps ARE GPS-enabled.

Be advised that Mapopolis is leaving the PDA market soon. They have announced that the maps will be available for download for a year, but after that, no more. Also no more updates to the software are planned.

Mapopolis is good, and it ran well on my old X5. Just wanted you to know what you are going to see.

Mapopolis' official forum is at GPSPassion.com
