The wife and I are going on a 3 months holiday to Europe and Africa. We are hiring a car for 2 weeks in europe.

I'm after some software that I can track our route in.

I have an X51mid with a Holux GPS 240, and am running Tomtom 6

I'm not even sure how to start looking for this software

I'm rather unclear about your requirement. You already have TomTom6, should you not just purchase the relevant maps of where you plan to visit. The map of Europe as an example but with particular attention for details of countries of interest. You may struggle a bit for maps of African countries as the coverage is not extensive or none existent.

TT6 has a facility to demonstrate your whole route before you set off. If on the other hand, you wish to track your movement while in the air, then a google search could throw up a thing or two.

I have the maps for Western Europe.

I have the future (route planning) and the present (in car navigation) covered.

What I would like is something for the past, and have seen around before is a piece of software that will record where we have been, and enable me to display this path in something like Google Earth.

BeelineGPS will record your track for you. Also, GPSGate has a logging function for NMEA data as well. From those you can look to generate a file for GE. I think version 2.5 of GPSGate has a more direct connection to GE.

Records your route, then uploads your route (when you sync the PDA with computer, or if you have a PDA phone) and you can see the route with Google Earth.
