Holux GR 271 users i have an idea for an atenna

i had a brain storm today on the way home from work, and saw the plug on my antenna for my XM radio - and it looks like the antenna receptacle on the gps might fit - has anyone tried this? i would, but how would i verify it is working better than just the regular built in antenna

if no one else tries this, i'll give it a whirl and see if it fits tomorrow and try to test it out.

Be careful. Some of those plugs have very subtle differences and are very susceptible to damage. One way to check to see if the antenna helps would be to place the unit in a metal box and see if it still tracks. The metal should block out much of the satellite signals and force reliance on the antenna.

what subtle differences would they have? i wasn't thinking of forcing the antenna in the receptacle.

are you speaking of other "technical" sublties? such as signal voltage or amperage or something? i have yet to try it, i keep forgetting to plug it in (and now that you mention it, i don't have a metal box to test it in - besides, how would i test inside a metal box unless i could fit inside the metal box to see if it's working?!) :D

There are several types of connectors (MC, MCX, MMCX). A good sneeze while handling these connectors is enough to damage them. That is all I am saying.
