Dell GPS software when SD card removed

I've loaded a bunch of states and provinces onto a 1GB SD card, then inserted into my Axim X51v.

It works well but if the card is accidentally ejected while the GPS software is running, the GPS software gets stuck on "Alabama" as region and won't switch (when setting a destination).

So far the only solution I've found is to re-install the software and maps, which is a real PITA, especially when I'm away from home.

Is there another workaround? A way to prevent it?

Thanks!

Can't you set your Ax in a secured holder so that the SD card is not accidentally ejected?

That sounds promising, how do you do that? I don't have manuals with me this trip. It wasn't an "eject" command it was pressing the card by accident.

That said, having had this happen, is there anything I can do other than reinstall the software and data? My cables are deeply packed in a bag not supposed to be opened during the trip. :(

Thanks!

Can't you install the software on a SD or CF card, along with the maps? Then if it happens again, just reinstall from the card.

Did you try just doing a seft reset? That should get the program working again.

Can you put a strip of tape over the top of the Ax? That will prevent the card from accidentally ejecting.

Thanks everyone! I tried the soft reset (forgot about it) and it seems to have cleared the problem.

I still want to avoid having the card pop out. Tape is one option, but is it possible to do it from software?

Thanks again!

u cant. the card ejection is a physical event, not like a CD/DVD-eject button

How in the hell is your SD card popping out? I have had my x51 for over a year & not once has my SD card accidentally popped out. I would be more concerned about that problem than your GPS software not working.

What's wrong with being stuck in Alabama?

I'm sure it's being pressed by clumsy fingers. For a long time I didn't have anything in the CF slot, which made it easy to press it by accident. Finally found the CF blank and put that in, which I thought would solve the problem. It reduced it but somehow fingers were still pressing when manipulating the unit (still using the stock sleeve, which may be contributing to this). That said, we're both sure we didn't have the SD card pop out the last time, yet the PDA insisted that a new card had been inserted.

I'll have to be more careful, and may cut a piece of tape to hold the card in.

Nothing at all, as long as you're not relying on the unit for navigation purposes while you're in Florida! ;)

Thanks everyone for the additional info.

Just a couple of other things that might help.
Have you upgraded your rom to A12?
And maybe you have the dissappearing card problem
Look here http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...earing+cf+card

Thanks Box, I'll take a look. I'm pretty sure I upgraded to A12 and that (in the past) the problem has always been related to accidentally popping the SD card (physically).
