Mapping, GPS, walking and trekking ...x50v

Hi I want to be able to use my x50v for hiking/trekking, at present I use a Garmin forerunner 101 for running and hiking purposes, but its limited to basic navigation, great for running distances as its designed for...

I would like a trail map ie. OS type map on my Axim, that links to GPS of some kind..

I also want a GPS unit that is light runs on batteries and will fit in my rucksack/pocket and last for quite a while, at least as long as the axim on extended battery.

Also with bluetooth running on the axim how is the battery drain ?

Hope you can help

alittle pricy but its the best one out there. http://www.memory-map.com/ You can use there maps or import your own (which i did)

BT GPS would be the way to go, I've been using one from Hicomm HI-303 with their BT slipper, I think they have been disconn. tho.

Reg batt, power saving move. I usally get about 6+ hours

cheers that looks great Memory map, perfect solution, I can buy the OS map needed and even use it on my PC as well, thanks for that.

Just need to source a BT GPS now, could get a good deal on a CF GPS card, looks like it will stick out a lot though.

Thanks again

One note of advice. When using it while walking, stay away from gps with static navigation. Directional movement will not register for movements under 3mph. There's an app to disable SN for some Sirf III receivers. Stay away from MTK chipsets, there's no way of disabling SN as of the present. Lot's of reasearch will you save 15% restocking fee.

Most Bluetooth receivers are very sensitive and lightweight that you can keep them inside your backpack/pocket when hiking.

Something with a datalogger might interest you.

I use Memory-Map and really like it in spite of the cost. I've used with an OnCourse BT-338 and am just starting to play with a new Wintec WTB-201 logger. Both work fine with Iguidance, OCN and Memory-Map and the logger function is nice when you just want to log a route without the PDA. Memory-Map will log the route while it's running and the GPS is active. The logger works nice with the desktop tools but Wintec hasn't released a PPC tool for the 201 yet.
