Question OCN6 or TomTom6

I have read and read and read. OCN6 or TomTom6?? That is the question.

OCN6 looks like it might have some advantages, but the dedicated SD card really has me turned off.

TomTom 6 you have to load maps of the entire US, How long does that take? Then their seems to be the issue of where the maps are stored and if the software can find them. I have a 2gb CF card and a 4gb SD card. My programs and files are on the CF card. The SD card stores movies and music. But sounds like maps would easily go here, IF TOMTOM can find them.

ANYBODY have any ideas?

My experience is that the TomTom program will locate the maps on the card, I am guessing here but it should not matter where the maps are, however there seems to be a preference for storing maps on SD cards. I have saved some music and other files on my 2gb SD card in addition to TomTom maps with no noticeable adverse effect. Tom Tom 6 is up-to-date and does not appear to be too memory hungry, it does the job efficiently. I can't help you with OCN6.

If you have both SD & CF cards, and put the maps on SD card, TT6 will not find the
maps on SD card, you need to remove the CF card before you launch the program
1st. It is a pain.

i agree that having a dedicated sd card for ocn6 stinks. at the same time, if you have a hard case for your ax it should have a slot for an extra sd card which you might be able to use to store the ocn6 sd. still, it stinks.

The upside to the dedicated SD card is that you can move the app from device to device freely.

I have switched from a X50v to a Cingular 8525, because of Dell dropping Axim support and a power connector issue on the X50v. I invested the repair money in a new PDA/cellphone instead of fixing the X50v. I do not see the dedicated SD card as an issue. I do not have the luxury of a SD and a CF as the 8525 only has a single MicroSD. The dedicated MicroSD is not an issue for me. I have a MicroSD I use unless I am using my GPS. Another MicroSD for Memory-Map Navigator and it's maps. I just pop the OCN6 MicroSD in when I want to use OCN6. Better get use to it now. Eventually you will need to replace the Axim like I had to. All devices I found and liked had either a MiniSD or more likely a MicroSD.

I still think this forum has some of the best information on GPS street navigation programs. I keep hoping to see a Jake OCN6 review to see what he thinks of it. There are definately improvements that can be made to OCN6, but that is true of every GPS street navigation program. I have used OCN6 several times now. It works fine for me. I was one of the old timers like Jake that prefers the 2D display. OCN6's 3D display is the best I have seen. It has made a convert out of me. I still miss my 2D display sometimes. The 2D display is an option in OCN6, but that 3D display is just so pretty. I am interest to see if it makes a convert out of Jake.

I am running and have done so for several months both CF and SD cards simultenously (4 & 2)gb respectively with TT6 residing permanently on the SD card. I have never had to remove my CF card in order start-up tomtom. My configurations have not changed except for the addition of programs and data files.

Well I finally decided. Why OCN6 may be the newest, I went with TomTom. Seems to have a good following. I just hated the idea of having to switch SD cards around. PLUS, TomTom looks like its PALM usable. With the AX axed, who knows what my next PDA will be.

I have run both OCN 6 and TT6. They are both nice programs, but OCN 6 requires a bit of tinkering (you must manually install the sys.txt fix), as you must manually pair the bluetooth before you start the software, whereas TT6 automatically starts it.

Some quick observations:
TT6:
TT6 is far more user friendly and easy to use.
It works out of the box with no tinkering
the new version 6 is very cool, and has a new desktop component
has seamless US/Canada maps
has more voice choices
has tons of POIs
can be installed on CF or SD
works with the x50v and the x51 series
turns the bluetooth on automatically
navigate to contacts

OCN6:
You must manually install the sys.txt fix in order to get it working properly
doesn't turn the bluetooth on automatically
has a sophisticated user interface that, while not intuitive, has many features. These many features, however, can slow it down a bit.
great graphics
seamless US map
30 day return policy
tons of POIs
navigate to contacts

I reviewed OCN6, and you can read it here.

Overall, I would say that they are both excellent. OCN has more features but is more complicated to use and doesn't connect to the bluetooth automatically. TT is faster, can be loaded onto your existing CF or SD card, and is more streamlined. You can't lose either way.

I ran OCN6 on my Axim X50v with WM2003SE and never had to install any sys.txt fix. I don't even know what that fix is supposed to do, but it's not required to get OCN6 to work.

When you ran ocn6, how long did you run it for? I couldn't run it for more than 2-3 minutes without it freezing up, until I installed the sys.txt fix, which is in my review.

Twelve hours is the longest run I've made with it.

I use iGo which supposedly is similar to OCN6. I really like it. I've seen TomTom and I won't switch.

I have a 8gb CF and a 2gb SD. I have my apps installed on my SD and my maps on my CF. I never remove anything.

Below are list we shipped with OCN6's sys.txt file and none of them has any control over axim / pda hardware.

[interface]
skip_contact_import=1 (skip contact importing feature)

[debug]
lbendlin=1 (OCN6 disable hardware button for you to lunch other application with the mapped button-to-application defination you set in Settings | Button page. This line will allow you to continue using the buttons to launch other applications as before)
show_oneway=1 (shows you traffic flow with blue circle and white arrows)
show_residentonly=1 (shows you, i believe in yellow color for residential streets)
show_gps_pos=1 (Shows you the Actual GPS position vs. estimating your position to the closest street)
show_signpost=1 (Not applicable and will be removed in next batch)
show_uturn=1 (Whether to show road where u-turns allowed (highlight whole road)
