Is there a way to make mapopilis "load maps when needed" ??

Ok so when I load a county, and then I am moving to the next one it loads the file if its on the same directory that the first one was? I have no problems with the Ax loading the whole state if I want, it just takes time but it would be even better if it does loads them by itself... is there a way?

It does that automatically, as long as it can find the next county. Just choose the option to load a single county, pick the count and make sure to un-check "load contiguous" and you have what you want.

...but you can't route to a county that's not loaded. Mapopolis won't find the address. (At least, I couldn't make it do it.)

That is true. To route between two addresses both counties and all the counties in between need to be loaded, or both start and end counties and the Major Roads maps in between. If there is a gap in coverage, then Mapopolis will report a failure to find a route. If the origin or destination counties are not loaded Mapopolis will not find the address to start the route.

Sorry, Mapopolis does not do that. You can load the "major roads" maps. If they touch both counties, that should work.

:( oh well... the only problem here is that - what if I dont have the names of all the counties in between? That is an extra step I have to do by searching for those names...

That's the big dig on Mapopolis. The major roads map shows counties as squares if you zoom to the right level. So it is possible to get the counties you want with only Mapopolis on your PPC. Or you can load whole states ....

Ive heard other people say the same thing, but I cannot get counties to show at any zoom level in Mapopolis. I'm using the Navigator maps, latest download, and I have tried every zoom level from all the way in to all the way out and no counties appear. Anybody get this actually working?

i havent seen that "loading as squares" thing either, everything to last version... last time I just loaded the full state... but that kills everything else(like playing MP3s because the memory goes bye bye...)

Maybe you're looking for the wrong thing???? When I open the major roads map for MD, I see several small yellow dots (default day colors). The circles are cities. The squares are counties. It does not show you county outlines or anything like that.

how to find counties to include in your find route

I emailed mapopolis support on this and btw they are quite responsive.

They have a tool to kinda show you what counties are adjacent to each other. This tool is found under download maps on their site. You will have to manually "predict" the counties your route will cover. Load them up, and get mapopolis to find a route for you.

I did found an error on this tool however..the road I was looking for was in a wrong county. I attribute this error to NavTech. The same eccentric mapping tool found on Yahoo Maps. It makes you go into local road all too often when theres a highway alternative to take, even when you tell it to route using highways.

In my opinion, this is a big problem with using Mapopolis. How do I look at their web site when I'm in my car plotting a new route? Their tech support says they are working on a tool to deliver this function. I think is beautifully done in Destinator 2. But Destinator 2 isnt as accurate as Mapopolis.

To me, PPC GPS is unreliable.

I've found the easiest way to find the counties is to copy the bitmap of each state's counties from the Mapopolis web site and paste it into a MS Word document, save the document of each state, then transfer to the AX (I use the SD card for all my maps).
If I need to find what county I need, I just open up the appropriate state on the ppc.

That's a bit broad! It's not unreliable, it is just as state of the art as the maps allow. GPS is inherently going to have errors, as maps cannot keep up with changes in roads, political boundaries, new neighborhoods, etc. That said, I find it remarkable that the mapping companies have gotten as accurate as they have. NavTech, the map provider for several packages, have a full staff who are out daily verifying their maps using GPS receivers to verify that the roads are where they think they are. Given that we have almost 4 million miles (6.37 million km) of highways in the US, the idea that we could have a mapping system capable of finding the fastest or shortest distance between any two addresses in that 4 million miles on a handheld computer is phenomenal. And to couple that with a GPS system capable of locating you to within 25 meters in that 4 million miles is a very powerful tool, indeed.

In short, any system that capable is going to have some errors. But NavTech sure doesn't have that many given the compexityof the problem!
