I read that it is something to do with the way the axim tries to start using the port as soon as it detects that something is plugged into it and therefore the gps software should be started before plugging in the sapphire, however for me, this doesn't seem to work. At least, it doesn't work with pocket streets 2002, (seems strange as this is the bundled software), I am going to get a copy of tom tom 2, and hopefully this will resolve the problem, but I'd rather find a way of making it work now before shelling out for tomtom2. Any ideas?
Yes, if you plug anything into the bottom port Activesync starts and tries to sync, slowing down the entire machine. To prevent that from happening, you must start the GPS software first and get it to looking for the GPS unit before you plug the GPS into the bottom of the Ax. (If the GPS receiver needs external power, that has to be applied before you plug it into the Axim as well.) I don't have PocketStreets, so I can't tell you how to do that, but it's more than just having the PStreets running, it has to be looking for the GPS unit on Com1 to block Activesync.

To test that the GPS unit is working, get GPSViewer.com from Holux at http://holux.com/ (it's free) and start it up, set it for COM1 and then plug the GPS receiver into the bottom of the Axim and it should connect just fine.

Analogix,

I too had the bundled pocket streets software with the Royaltek Saphire, but could I get it to see the receiver.

Tried absolutely everything, including hints from this site and also pocketgps.co.uk but could not get it to work.

Like you say this was just the freebie software that came with the receiver, and I had already ordered TomTom2, this on the other hand works fine, I dont have to follow any of the above rules about plugging the receiver in first starting the software etc. etc.

This is how I start up in the morning receiver is left plugged in to accessory socket not powered, start car up turn, on Axim plug in charger/gps cable, start TomTom time to first fix >10secs away you go!!

By the way to some other questions before yours and after, yes TomTom is voice guided I can hear it perfectly adequatley through the Axim speaker even at motoway speed... as long as you radio is'nt blaring....

Autoroute and pocket streets is not navigation software it will only show where you are in GPS mode.

the speaker doesnt sound that loud or clear to me.

yes, pretty much most of them have voice directions and stuff like that, and most are quite good even though through that tiny Axim speaker!

I recently purchased a compactflash GPS receiver off Ebay and it works unbelievably well. I can get up to 6-8 sattelites in my bedroom and the other day on the way home got 11 in the car with no external antenna. I did a "buy it now" and got it for $115 bucks and it even came with a free antenna and a cheap little holder and a few other things. I would go with the CF over the serial because you have the option of mobility and taking it with you outside the car. Works great with my Axim and Destinator 2.

Here is the link for he GPS. It works awesome!

I have the holux and external arial and it works very well for me. The difference I see using the external arial is 1-2 more satellites being used for navigation. It doesn't improve accuracy, but having lots of satellites in view and working improves reliability and stability. I would say the exernal arial is nice to have but not necessary.
