Mad Holux CF GPS & Otterbox 3600

Shouldn't really be an angry face, just an unhappy face...

OK, my company has been trying to put together weatherproof GPS-enabled field data collection systems using Axims, GPS cards and Otterbox cases. On a pure cost basis the Axim can't be beat. As a prototype we ordered a Holux CF GPS card (270) and an Otterbox 3600. The Holux card and Otterbox work great seperately, but not together! The problem is that the Holux card is a smidge (a matter of millimeters) too tall and too thick to allow the Axim/GPS combo to be properly placed inside the Otterbox. That's the first problem. The second problem is even more critical; while inside the Otterbox the Holux card can not lock onto a GPS signal.

Before throwing more money at the problem I'd like to ask of anyone knows of another CF GPS card that will work inside the Otterbox? Thanks!

How about a bluetooth card and GPS receiver? Then you could put the receiver in your pocket, or backpack, and if you needed waterproofing, use a zippered plastic sandwich bag on the GPS receiver.

TeleType makes one.

I recently completed a review of the Otterbox 3600 for PocketPCLouisville.com. While writing the review, I figured out how to put my Axim and Holux CF GPS inside. It DOES work (with a little McGuiver ingenuity)!

Read it here: Otterbox 3600 Review with GPS info

If you want to use your Axim and CF GPS in the great outdoors, this case may be just the thing. It's big, but it does the job.

Watch for my upcoming review of FUGAWI software. This package can display marine or topo maps. Looks like a good solution for boaters. hikers, or other adventurous types who want to maximize the use of their Axim, and not invest in a separate GPS.
