two weeks ago I bought in the US a CF GPS (Ambicom).

and it cost only 150$.

If your in your car try the Arkon Multimedia PDA mount for Axim. www.arkon.com If you're on foot just get a set of Sony earbuds ($12.95) at your local Target store (they work great).

HI There.
I just read your thread re: low volumeon the Aim. I prchased a Axim for my Girlfriend for Xmas last year. She loves it. I have a Compaq Ipaq 3630 and I just got a GPS receiver for it. I am settibg up my friends Axim with the same software that I have. MAPOPOLIS. We had the same low volume problem that you have encountered but the Mapopolis software has a settings option that lets you raise the volume of the Axim unit to acceptable levels. I also have found the Mapopolois software to be excellent. Any questions let me know.

First, the "best" setting in Mapopolis for the voice volume is the 4th from the left (or 3rd from the right) as agreed upon in numerous threads here (I concur, for what that's worth). Make sure that you are set there.

Then it depends on what you are doing. In the car, an Arkon multimedia mount (see link above) works great - MUCH louder & more clear. Buy.com has it for $40.

Haven't really used the GPS on foot, but I know that the Sony earbuds work great for MP3's, so I would go with that idea.

Cool hey dear people!

thank you all for the help.
1) while walking (and I almost not doing that) I use headphones and it 's great.
2) I'm working with the destinator and the navugator and not the mapopolis.
3) is'nt it great (the GPS)?

I had a similar problem with my Ax. I got lucky however as my car stereo has an auxiliary hookup. I just hooked up the headphone jack on the Ax to this Aux port and now I can hear the Gps/Mp3 player through the car stereo.

The built-in antenna on many CF GPS' are wide enough to block the Axim's headphone jack so you can't plug anything in there. E.g., the Pharos and GlobalStar CF GPS' (off the top of my head).

The great thing about the Ambicom CF GPS is that the antenna doesn't block the headphone jack. Altho the built-in antenna sticks out quite a bit when the CF card is installed...

cbuchner1 wrote a review of the Ambicom CF GPS here:

(Sorry for the big URL, I'm a newbie.)

Hrm, can't remember exactly, but I think Pharos (or some other company) has a model that can detach the antenna from the CF card. Or, of course, you can get a GPS which uses a mouse antenna instead of the kind built into the CF card... (I don't own a PDA GPS, but I think some mouse antenna-only models might restrict GPS use to inside a vehicle with cigarette lighter power jack.)

First, it's a GlobalSat GPS (not GlobalStar), and it does NOT block the headphone jack (I have one).

AS far as I'm aware, there is no CF GPS that you can "detach the antenna from the CF card," unless you are referencing the EXTERNAL antenna which plugs into the antenna on the CF card. You still have about a 1.5" square antenna sticking out of the Ax.

Haicom does make a "foldable" CF GPS which allows you to fold it back, but it (the antenna portion) is still outside the Ax.

A mouse GPS needs to be powered externally (as opposed to the CF GPS which is powered via the CF slot) so you are restricted to auto use (or carrying aroud a power pack).

I recommend a CF GPS even if you think you will always use it in the car - you never know until you get it how you might use it.

Sorry, I was in a hurry and forgot the exact name. Glad to hear the headphone jack is unobstructed. I've read in other threads (sorry can't remember where) of GPS CF receivers blocking the Axims' headphone jack.

This particular Pharos model has a detachable GPS receiver antenna:
http://www.pharosgps.com/products/co...lash/PF023.htm

"When you are inside your vehicle, you can simply detach the receiver and use the extention cable to set the receiver on your dashboard for improved reception."

But I don't know if the head phone jack is blocked by either the detachable GPS receiver (antenna) or the remaining GPS CF component still sticking out of the CF slot. Anyone?

Anyway, anyone know of any other CF GPS brands & models which don't block the Axim's headphone jack?

Thanks. CF GPS are pretty hard to find where I live. I plan to buy one online after I save up my cash.

Just saw a pic of the Deluo Fortuna CF GPS and it doesn't seem to block the headphone jack.

Yikes - for $259 you might as well buy a BT GPS and never worry about blocking anything.

I would highly recommend the GlobalSat. There are also many other reviews/thread about other CF GPS's that people have had good results with.

Good luck.
