Big Smile Axim 400 with CF GPS Antenna and TomTom2

Bought an Axim 400MHz with PC2003 specifically as a mobile GPS travel guide.

Plugged in the CF Hiacom HF303e foldable GPS antenna, and installed TomTom2's full UK map set (92Mb) on to a 128MB SD Card.

All works a treat. Voice commands are clear on all but the highest settings. But can easily use the headphone socket to play voice and MP3 through the car speakers via the ICE system, use an earpeice.

Normally locks on to 5 satellites (can choose between 12 sats).

I'm well pleased with the combo.....

I'm in the UK and bought the UK map set of TT2 and the CF foldable GPS from a GPS online shop, and the charger off eBay for $8. The TT2 gives the choice of naviagation mode, were the voice and on screen navigation provide directions. POI on or off. Day and night time backlight screen settings, several choice of voice.

The map screen allows the user to zoom from full view of the country, into a specific area of the country down to an area of about 300 square metres.

Go to the TT site and download the demo. It's quite accurate to the real thing.

The CF GPS anntenna came with a serial cable to hook up to a laptop/PC (Male mini-1394 to PS/II cable)

Never liked vent mount kit . IMO vents are not designed for the extra loading.

For the money I'm very pleased with the accuracy and ease of use.

Only down side is, unlike the Navman (which is twice the price), when in navigation mode, there are no street names on the screen. These have to choosen when in map mode.

I've been looking at tom tom, so far as I know, no other package gives you the ability to avoid major roads that may be congested at certain times of the day, have road work etc. I understand it also includes points of interest. I'm interested in hearing how good you think the maps are, especially for really rural areas. For some reason I find that Florida doesn't get the best coverage in the rural areas with some of these packages. I didn't really get the jist of how map updates are handled with tom tom, I hope they don't make you pay full price again when you just want map updates??? I appreciate the comments of people that own it, I'd be running it on an axim advanced with a holux cf gps unit.

Hi I bougt the TT2 and CF GPS anttenna from http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/

Since TT2 requires authisation codes that have time limits before activation ie. first is immediate, second is 1 week and therafter 1 year, I decided to buy new and negate eBAy. As it turned out it was cheaper to buy a pack age from http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/ than on eBAY.

IMHO a foldable version would be better as it can be pointed to the sky when the Axim is vertically mounted like on the dash etc.
