Best European mapping software?
I am in the USAF stationed in the UK. I bought my Axim a couple of weeks ago, and will probably ask the wife for a CF GPS for xmas. Was wondering which mapping software did the best job of covering Europe, especially the UK and Ireland. I have Pocket Streets now, but only because I bought MS Autoroute 2003 earlier this year (not for GPS use.) It has pretty good UK coverage, but very little coverage of Ireland (just major highways and larger cities.) We're planning a trip to County Mayo early next year and I would like to use the GPS/Axim during the trip. Does anyone know of software that covers Ireland? Thanks.

I'm in the USAF in Germany and just got my Holux 270 w/ Mapopolis Navigator. I've only used it for 1 day so I can't give you a thorough review. So far this thing is great! I did a lot of research before I bought it and based my decision largely on inputs from this site. I was torn between Tom Tom and Mapopolis. I THINK Tom Tom might be better for Europe only because it's been here a little longer. Mapopolis has great customer service and updates software often...it's also cheaper. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I read in another thread that Mapopolis didn't have good N. Ireland coverage, so I'm not sure how good their ROI coverage would be. I've noticed quite a few people in the UK mention Tom Tom, so I may do some more research on their software.

I'm in Italy and I've used Mapopopolis here and in Spain and France. It works very well. I too did a lot of research and found it very accurate. It finds even the smallest unmarked streets in Naples and the adaptive routing (when you miss your turn) is fantatastic. For hardware, I use the CF I-trek with external antenna.

I just got back from Ireland and I used Mapopolis there. The coverage is ok in larger cities, such as Dublin, Galway, Belfast. It's pretty much useless everywhere else.
I don't believe there is a good mapping solution for Ireland. Tom-Tom may provide some coverage, but I don't know if it's worth the price.

I have TT2. It covers Belfast and surroundings.
i.e, only a small area of NI.

There are two vector (i.e. routable) map providers currently, NavTech and TeleAtlas and only NavTech (used by Mapopolis, Destinator and CoPilot for instance) provides some detailed coverage of Ireland for large cities with highway maps in between.
I'm amazed you're seeing any coverage in TomTom Navigator, as it's been unreported up to date and TomTom don't claim any! I'll have to look into that.

I'm using the latest version of TT2.23.
I found Belfast in NI by using the Map view and then zooming out to reveal the UK & NI. Then tapped on the general area of Belfast, before zooming in on that region. The Map comes up with roads and street names.
Seemed to navaigate ok to the Falls Rd in NI.
