GPS Tracking Without Internet?

Here is what I want to do:

- I drive in the car with a GPS device
- Allow my friend to watch my progress (via Internet most pro'ly)
- I do not have Internet connection, so I do NOT upload my position data to Internet. The 'tracking' tool must take data from GPS 'servers' directly.

Is this possible?

Not the way you describe, no. The GPS satellite system does not keep track of the GPSr.

In short, you must have some way of sending the data out yourself - generally this would be via phone, as others have suggested.

As ThatGuy says, the GPS system doesn't track anyone, the satellites only broadcast a time signal that the receiver uses to calculate location. The only way for your friend to know where you are is for you to transmit it somehow. If you don't want internet connections, the only option is cell phone, but I don't know of any application, other than the VITO app mentioned earlier, that will use the cellular system for that purpose.

Somehow I believe that it should be possible to get GPS data through some gateway in the GPS.

(1) Vehicle tracking systems (e.g. in some bus and train services) only have a GPS device in the vehicle without a connection to the Internet. They are monitored remotely from an observation center. This is exactly I want to do, but using my Holux device, and without subscribing to a vehicle tracking service as such.

(2) Google Earth Plus/Pro (never used it) has a GPS tracking option that supports a limited makes of GPS receivers. Can anyone tell me how that works? The fact that only some devices are supported makes me believe that it must not be uploading GPS data via internet (which shd work with all receivers).

Any ideas guys?

The GPS is a one-way, passive, receive only system as stated by ThatGuy and JakeRich.
Otherwise it would be very difficult to use by the military in the field because you can detect a transmitter.

GPS has nothing to do with the internet, which is a two-way, transmit-receive system !

If you want others to know your position you must tell (transmit) them in some way - phone, internet, radio etc.

I don' understand the logic of this statement.
Google Earth Plus/Pro needs to communicate the GPS data in a way, which is not supported by all GPS receivers.

So, the VITO seems to be a good choice.

OK... back to basic.

A GPS passivle receives a signal (hopefully) and provides the position to a serial/BT port.

A connected device (serial/BT) can read that position data provided by the GPS. This device will need some sort of connectivity to the internet or have the ability to send messages somewhere.

What you want is something to take that position data, and email/SMS/"send" to a remote device. This remote device will do the lookup on the position data.

Once again, the vito thing seems to be what you need, BUT you will have to have gps unit connected to a PPC phone in the vehicle you want to track. Then you will need to have an internet connected PPC phone device receiving the messages sent by the GPS connected device. This Internet connected device will lookup the location via the internet as the Vito program is configured to do so.
