GPS very laggy - 3 to 4 seconds

Hi all,

I am currently using a Dell X50v and have found that the GPS data being received is delayed by approx 3 to 4 seconds.

It used to be around the 2 second mark, but seemed to get better.

But now, it is at least 3 seconds..

Currently I'M running the following set up

A05 Rom
OZVga
1GB SD Card with my apps on
32MB (Yes I know) CF card

EverMore 920 BT Receiver.

This morning I did a hard reset and installed just the following

.NET CF 2.0
GPSGate 2.0
VB .NET written GPS app
Microsoft Reader.

And it still does the same. Sometimes if I stop and start again after 2 secs, the GPS never registers 0 MPH.

I've also attempted it in OZVga and SEVga, same issue.

Before the hard reset I also run TomTom v6, but this also had the 4 second delay.

Any idea on what else I can check. When I had a X5 with a CF GPS Unit, the delays were much less.

Welcome to Aximsite!

Your post was confusing. Was the time on the X50 ever in the 1-2 second range, or was that only on the X5? What software are you using? You referred to TomTom, but not what version and you said "also" with that reference. How many ports are you generating with GPSGate? Are you logging the data? Which card? BTW, GPSGate is now up to at least version 2.5.

My first recommendation would be to get rid of all the VGA Hacks, (Ozvga, SEVga) you don't need them. The software willl know the resolution and adjust appropriately.

Ok... phew, lets get this answered.

1) - Tom Tom version 6
2) - I used to get 1 to 2 second responses on the X50v, the X5 used to be pretty much on 1 sec.
3) - The 'also' part was a typo on my part. What I meant was before the Hard reset, when I ran Tom Tom, it would also give me the 3 - 4 secs delay. Meaning it's not the VB app as I first thought, but something with the whole package.
4) - I'm running GPSGate 2.2 at the mo. Although I have installed it, it's not currently running. Before the HR I had one virtual port setup.
5) - The SD card I am running is a Toshiba 1Gb, CF card is a Casio.
6) - I've tried it with the OZVga hack on and off.. I use it as I prefer running in 'real' VGA mode.

I cannot really understand what has changed to almost double the response.
Also it's not like the PDA is buffering the input, as when I stop and then go after a sec, the GPS software does not register the 0 MPH.

Is there any benefit of upgrading the ROM revision? A few times now I get the 'BT cannot start as the license has expired' message, but it normally works anyway.

Many Thanks for your reply.

Paul.

The BT error message is bogus. It shows up if you leave the BT running and power off, or soft reset, the Ax. Try to get consistent about turning off the BT before you do either of those two and that error won't show up. I programmed one of my front buttons to be wireless on/off so that I can shut off BT with two button presses.

If you had good response time with the setup before, there must be some change to make it slower. Have you tried a smaller utility to see if the lag is in the GPS receiver itself? To do that, get something like visualGSPce (google for it) and see if with just that app and no GPSGate running the lag is still there. If so, then something is wrong with the GPS receiver. Then add GPSGate and see if that adds the lag, and if not, then the problem has to be in TT. Start simple and add complexity one at a time until the problem appears.

I've tried to isolate as much as possible.

GPSGate is not running.

Both TT and my app (Which isn't too intensive) show the same about of lag.

I even took the drastic measure of peforming a Hard Reset to clear everything out and reinstalling just the neccessary to test...

Wish I had another GPS unit to test it with... :(
