GPS & Streets & Trips programs

First of all, the 6945 is supposed to come with Pocket Streets & Trips 2006, but every time I try to start it, it looks for a map but can't find one. I did purchase the permanent key from NavTeq, but even that didn't help.

I've got Streets & Trips 2001, but it won't recognize the GPS device even tho it's connected & sync'd to the desktop.

I'm willing to purchase Streets & Trips 2007, but it requires, as Microsoft says: "GPS functionality requires a GPS device that supports NMEA 2.0 or later." BUT, HP Live Chat can't tell me & says I have to become a partner to get access to the engineers, so that was a total waste of time.

I just want to plan a motorcycle trip on some back roads and have it all plotted out before I go so that I don't have to set a new destination from every little town I want to ride thru, to get to the next town, on the way to my destination. At least with Streets & Trips (2001), I can plot out the whole trip with zero minute stops at each town. But, on the GPS, I have to set individual "favorites" & the navigate to the first one & then reset my destination to the second one, and then navigate there before resetting the destination to the third one. I can't just plot it all in one because the route settings won't take me there - Interstate is quicker and shorter, but I want the more scenic route.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Meanwhile, I'm going to get out my three installation disks and see if I can install the Streets & Trips 2006 that is supposed to come with the unit.

THANKS for any help,
David
San Antonio, TX

EDIT: I've popped in the Software Installation disk for the PPC & it had a link to the Microsoft website to download maps, which I did download all the maps for Texas. I PRESUME that they'll work, but they are city maps ONLY and not a state map, so I'm questioning their usefulness on a multi-city tour (250 miles of side roads & back roads from San Antonio to Galveston) and trying to use a program that'll take me through points b, c, d, e, f, ... w, x, & y while on my way from a to z.

I really just want to be able to plot my ful route on my PC & download the map to my PPC & use it in conjunction with my GPS. This 6945 has performed amazingly well in everything that it's done, I can't imagine that I'm asking too much!

I don't have that particular PDA, but I don't think Pocket Streets and Trips does routing on the PDA. And the the map size is, or was, limited by the export size from the Laptop version, so the maps don't have huge coverage.

You might want to look at systems that actually provide dynamic routing and voice prompts--OnCourse Navigator, iGuidance, TomTom, etc.

You're asking way too much from this software. Think of it as a paper map of a metro area in which you can search points of interest and places, then connect the route from where you are (all the GPS will do for you) to where you want to go. It will NOT do any routing or give turn by turn directions. I do use it and like it for getting an idea of an area and locating things, but for what you want you need and actual navigation program like iguidance, TomTom, Oncourse, or any other that offers true navigation. As for maps, you can download them from MS, or cut them from the desktop program (which surprisingly will do navigation, but not the PPC). There is a size limitation and I don't think you can get all of a state, not even Rhode Island. Programs like iguidance 4 (and many of the others)on the other hand have maps of the entire US/Canada and require 2 gigs alone. Iguidance 3 used a map loader for the PC and you could load individual states with connecting highways which dramatically reduced the memory requirement.
