GlobalSat BC-307 -- AWESOME CF GPS!

Just received my GlobalSat BC-307 compactflash GPS from Semson for $129 (w/ cradle and ext antenna and PCMCIA adapter) and it's AWESOME Just plugged it into my AXIM and I was off and running. Also bought Mapopolis Nav (from Semson) for $89. I loaded the 'free' version and one map--this thing is TOO kool! Semsons customer service was great--very prompt in shipment and email replies.

I travel on planes almost everyweek and I'm in a new city all the time. How the heck did I do without this? All I do is plug in the address where I'm headed and the voice command takes me--and if I miss an exit it immediately re-routes me. Hey I know this is old news for all of you, but my gosh I never knew how extremely powerful this really is! Anyone tried the Mapopolis Clear Route yet???

So we are talking about $220 for an in-car Axim GPS system?

Price seems right. I have tried the software and have no problem with it. I do not want to spend more than $300 for a CF GPS system for my Axim.

Do I go for this system????

Comments and suggestions welcome!!

It is the same set-up that I have (although I recommend getting the Arkon mutimedia mount also 'cuz the Ax speaker is kinda weak - definitely needed in a convertible).

It works great - just mentioned to my wife last night that it's very nice how we no longer have to even worry about how to get somewhere.

For example, we drove to Lambeau Field for it's grand re-opening last night (about 2 hours from my home). Although we usually go to one game a year, I typically am not the driver so I don't pay too much attention on how to get there. Last night we took the kids so I did drive. Plugged in the route & went - worked great. Even better was the drive home - traffic was kinda backed up so I took a quick peek on Mapopolis & saw what I thought could be an alternative. It didn't quite work out like I thought (no on-ramp where I had hoped) I was re-routed instantly and avoided most of the traffic. That would have never been possible in an unknown city without a map & good navigator (which, unfortunately, my wife is not :) ).

The total for my setup was $210:
- Globalsat BC-307 $69 & $10 s&h (e-bay)
- Mapopolis Navigator $89 (direct from them)
- Arkon multimedia mount $39 (buy.com)

Ted:

This is a great system.

I paid $129 for BC307 (w/ ext antenna and PCMCIA adaptor and Arkon mount)

$89 for Mapopolis Navigator.

All from Semsons (awesome service and great prices). I did some on Ebay for cheaper, I just wanted to have somewhere to call if there was an issue.

This is a GREAT GPS system, and would highly recommend it!

Question

Ok, someone lend me a clue. I've been trying to find a place to buy the Globesat BC-307, but I'm only able to find European companies that sell it. Living in America, I'd rather avoid paying for the extra shipping charges associated with such a purchase.

Does anyone have a reputable source for the BC-307 here in the states, or possibly in Canada? Thanks

You can buy it here: http://semsons.com/gpshardware.html

or try on e-bay (that's where I got mine).

Does anyone know if this GPS can be used with MS Street and Trips 2003? I already have it and don't want to spend another $80 for software.

Along with use in my Axim, I want to be able to use the CF card in my laptop computer (with a PC Card adapter). Will the GlobalSat BC-307 work fine in my laptop running Windows XP Pro and MS Streets 2004??

Apparently so. I am looking into getting mapping software now. Do ms streets give voice directions? or just test?

Does anyone know of software that includes topographic maps. I hike and mountain bike a lot and it would be cool to use my pda to track routes (and find them too!)

Ted, you can use the GlobalSat BC-307 in your laptop. If you got the Semson kit, it includes a CF to PCMCIA adaptor - you can buy these for a few bucks if you don't have one.

Plug the GPS into the adaptor and plug that into your laptop's PCMCIA slot.
Windows will try to identify the card and it'll show up as a generic CF card.
When the new hardware wizard pops up, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)", and click Next.
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." and click Next.
In the 'Manufacturer' column (left), select "(Standard port types)" and in the 'Model' column (right) select "Communications Port" then click Next.
You'll get an alert saying that the driver isn't recommended.
Click Yes.
The wizard will then go ahead and install that driver.

Your GPS should show up in the hardware list as COM5 and you can select it in any application as COM5 including terminal apps if you want to see the data stream (set the port properties to 4800,8,N,1,No handshake)

Hope this helps.
