No satellite signal

Folks-
Took the plunge. Bought the Holux GR-271 after reading "Lawman"'s review. I received the unit. Kinda sorta disappointed in the accompanying literature. Manual is spartan. For the learned, this might not be a problem. I'm still in the infancy stage of PDA use. Hold my hand and lead me on, so to speak. Downloaded the CD contents onto my desktop and then sync-ed to my Axim.
Followed the instructions for setup (I think). The orange led burns steadily on the receiver, yet the screen status says no signal. I'm using "NMEA" as the manufacturer, NMEA 0183 RMC as the model, port is COM4 and 4800 baud.
Downloaded the trial software to Memory Map to my desktop. Sync-ed to my PDA. Went to GPS setup. I'm still getting no fix. What's wrong? Last night, I also saw an error message that implied that problems with COM4. Now, I can't even get that to reappear. Also, when I'm in the Pocket Navigator program, I touched the green circle just to the right of Menu and my screen went blank white with no prompts to return. Used soft start to get to my "Today" screen.
All help appreciated.
Thanks!
John

What PDA? Before trying any exotic software, get the simple utility (probably on the CD with the Holux) and just get the connection going. The easiest way is to use the utility from Holux, let it find the GPS data for you, note the port and speed, then use the same settings for your mapping software. Also, only ONE application can use the GPS data unless you have an X51 with the gps management utility, or you use something like GPSGate. So you'll have to make sure that you properly kill anything running using the GPS before you'll be able to start something else that needs the GPS data.

The utility from Holux is called GPS Viewer and can be downloaded here.

Ok, the suggestion still applies. Get GPS Viewer, install it, soft reset (to kill everything running), start GPS Viewer, let it find the GPS, note the settings, exit GPS Viewer and set the same port/baud in your mapping software. Done.

Should work Com4, 4800 baud. Try that with the GPS view from Holux. Do a soft reset, plug the unit in, then start the software and set the port above. You should see the LED come on, and after a bit see satellites tracked. If you're inside a building you may have problems, and it's best to be outside with a clear view of the sky. Once you know things work, try the other software again. Make sure that you never have more than 1 piece of software running at a time (that includes having a program running twice at the same time). I recommend a soft reset before starting any piece of GPS software until you've got it working, then use something like Magic Button to shut down applications when you're finished with them.
