GPS on Axim or Standalone GPS unit?

It came to a point where I need to make up my mind. Go get a 4.3 inch wide screen GPS receiver (TomTom 910 or 720) or go get axim and continue using outdated mapopolis with my CF receiver?

I cannot make up my mind, I loved the way mapopolis worked, the way it drew, updated, dragged, hitting up/down to drive through steps in routing in fast speed.. and the button config, etc.. the way you could open/close maps based on major roads maps, address search, etc.. the whole package, just worked great.

Now, I am thinking about buying Axim X51v and continue using my CF receiver OR go get one of those tomtom receivers.

I cannot make up my mind.

I was personally in the same boat as you, exactly one year ago. I was thinking i'd have more usage for a PPC, therfore went ahead and got my 1st Axim.

Then proceeded to purchase.... CF's & SD's cards.
.................................................. ... BT Reciever
.................................................. ...... Pow'rd Mobile Mount
.................................................. ............... Software

Got it all working to absolute perfection. TomTom6 being my overall app of choice, due to nothing more than it works the best.
Total cost= aprox $450.00

Since I travel with laptop, the Axim never used as expected. GPS is ALL it does.

I recently had the opportunity to "borrow" a friends newly purchased TT-one-XL
Nice just powering the thing up....and done. No messing with cabling , ect.

In the near future, will deff be buying a TT all-n-one [model# yet to be decided]

So, my advice to you would make the buying decision based on usage.

My usage would be only GPS, and after using my X5 during last 3 days, I decided not to buy a GPS or a New Axim. I will stick to my X5 and continue using it.

As for cables, etc.. I never had to fiddle with cables, and it is always incredibly fast, since it has 400 mhz processor. I have CF receiver so it works fine, no drivers, no application install, just boot up mapopolis and start it..

I am in a similair situation. I still want to use my X5 and CF receiver but my tomtom maps are outaded by approx 3 years. The other problem is that my PC does not have a dvd drive so a lot of the gps software that is compatible with wm2003 comes only dvd, especially the ones that have good prices.

I really kike Tomtom but no one can really confirm from what I been able to find if TT works on 06.

I tried Odyseyy Mobile demo on my axim. It worked great, except the voice was not that clear.

The other options are iguidance or copilto but the prices for my current budget are a little too high right now

Buy a stand alone unit then it may be cheaper depending on what you buy.

I forgot to get back to this topic, but I decided to buy X51v from a fellow user, and I did, it seemed to work fine with Haicom MMF + Mapopolis VGA version, but it felt quirky and not as solid as X5, and it felt like emulation.. Not sure why. Anyway, I dropped my X51v a few days later, and broke the screen.
So now I have no choice but to continue using my X5. It works just fine, and I will continue using it for a few more years.

For those interested, there is an incredible deal at COSTCO for TomTom XL-S (with Text to Speech) Costco - $100 Off TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3" Touch Screen Display It is $250 with COSTCO membership.
Considering crutchfield sells the same item for $299 with $100 rebate, it is not bad at all, if anyone is interested.

x51v and TomTom 6 work well together either with a bluetooth or haicom cf gps unit. Best to get a fitted powered cradle as well as I'm sure that the weight of the connector attached to the bottom of my previous pda damaged the contacts. Might be cheaper to buy a TomTom unit though

Hey guys, I currently have an Axim X51v, I bought this originally as my Diary and text, excel files etc, once I installed a wireless modem at home I used it to surf the net when my wife is using my Laptop, however it is now my GPS unit as well.

I did contemplate getting a standalone GPS unit as my in-laws have a Navman PiN 570, but GPS units here in New Zealand ranged from NZD$599.00 to NZD$1200.00 where as software is about $250 to $350.

When I found that I could install Garmin CF Que and use some free maps for NZ, great it had auto routing but NO 3D views or clear maps just a topo style map... ** YUCK **....

In the end I decided not to get a standalone GPS unit as I had seen Garmin where about to release their Mobile XT for PPC and now I have finally upgraded to Garmin Mobile XT, and using City Navigator v3 with New Zealand maps (XMAS present YES), just love it very accurate, very fast auto correction with in 1-2 seconds and bingo recalculated and new route advised, tried this heaps by turning down different roads home.

Found the interface is easy to use as well.

Cheers

Jace
