Exclamation Finally: Download GoogleMaps to PPC-cache, view/ navigate on-or OFFLINE!

Tracky 2.1 released today! Zoom and pan your GoogleMaps area online, use it OFFLINE! :approve:

The most important upgrade is the full online support of GoogleMaps. You can simply select whether you want to use satellite, street, or hybrid Google maps. The maps of your choice will then automatically be downloaded and shown! Obviously, you need internet access on your PocketPC:

1: via GSM, GPRS, EDGE, or UMTS: you need to have agreed on an internet service with a mobile operator, or

2: via WiFi to your own wireless router, or

3: via a connection to your internet enabled PC (with USB, serial cable, or BlueTooth)

Once maps have been downloaded, they are stored in a cache folder on your PocketPC. These maps will still be available if your PocketPC no longer has internet access, even if you restart Tracky or your PocketPC. Since not many people have a contract with mobile operators yet, the typical usage of this service is as follows:

connect your PocketPC to your PC (see option 3 above)
enable GoogleMaps by choosing your preferred map type
move and scale the screen to those areas for which you like to see the maps, wait until these maps are properly shown (this sometimes takes a couple of seconds since your download connection can be slow)
repeat steps (2) and (3) for a different map type if you like
now disconnect your PocketPC and turn it off
Now get to the place where you like to use Tracky, and start it. You will see that all downloaded maps are still available!

Read more and download at:

http://www.trackthisout.com/Download.htm

New features:

- full integration with online GoogleMaps (satellite, street, and hybrid maps)

- hyperzoom shows world-level overview of tracks and POIs

- 'auto follow' temporarily disabled when dragging screen

- user can choose to save GPX files in ASCII or UNICODE format

- tickmarks in menus show if GPS, license, language, TrackMe, and/or GoogleMaps are enabled/configured

- 'Internet' tab in config->settings menu shows up/download statistics and allows to configure download cache

For those with a flat rate data tariff or phone, this sounds rather good...

Thanks! Very useful info. Wished Google updates their satellite maps. The view of my house is from 3 years ago!

It's good even without flat rate data tariff or phone. Just zoom and pan our area of interest at home on our connected PC, or at a hot-spot, and everything is cached. Re-use cache info, while offline! :) No need to be online all the time.

Hi.

Real-time when connected, automatic downloaded to cache through connection, when not connected Tracky reads GoogleMaps from cache.

While connected, zoom and pan the area you would like to use when you are offline. Voila, it's in the cache!

Works great. Use TrackyTry to evaluate.

my first time trial of Tracky 2.1

This app looks great as I'm in the process of buying an off-road app for hiking and geocaching.

3 quick observations:

(1) does not seem to support DGPS (Differential GPS) on my Garmin 10x Bluetooth receiver (SirfIII) and possibly WAAS (not sure if WAAS/EGNOS somehow impacts DGPS)

I configured my BT on com8 and selected 4800 baud, and noriced that any readings related to WAAS/DGPS show up red (Invalid) - (BTW, on garmin receivers, an easy way to distinguish a DGPS reading is when you see a satellite number above 32, in my case (east coast) i see either a 48 or 51)

It does not seem to obtain 2D locks (I compared it whilst simultaneously running GPSinfo) - anytime GPSinfo showed a 2D lock, this app showed INVALID and thus no lock

(2) While I really liked the Google functionality, for hiking and geocaching a topo map is what really helps (as Google does not show trails covered by trees, etc) - so, i almost bought Back country Navigator - which instead of google maps it automatically downloads aerials or topos from usgs databases. so my point here is: would i be able to easily download USGS/terra server topo maps to this app?

(3) Can this app display Full screen maps like Navio?

So, in summary for hiking and Geocaching, : I've evaluated:
a) BeeLine gps (loved it as it fully supports DGPS but main problem is there is no map functionality - only a blank screen!!!)
b) Navio - (best Google map interface as it shows in full screen - currently my top choice)
c) Back Country navigator (best and easiest to download precalibrated US topo maps - my second top choice, only because it doesn't seem to support Google maps and I wouldn't be able to use it outside of the USA)
d) Tracky 2.1 - just learned about it today - looks excellent if only it could work with my Garmin BT receiver - see my 3 observations above.

I should probably post this feedback on the off-road sticky, but wanted to get feedback on those of you that have used Tracky2.1

cheers

Hi.

I've been using Tracky for over a year now, together with my Axim x51v and Dell BT-309. I'm not familiar with Garmin GPS-receivers, so I suggest you to use their support:

support@trackthisout.com

Hopefully they will solve your Garmin-related problems.

Zumpen - thks for your feedback. I was curious whether your BT-309 GPSr supported DGPS - if so does Tracky show you when the satellites are in DGPS mode as opposed to SPS mode?

BTW, I was very impressed w/ Tracky - especially the "Accurator" tool which not only uses the positioning averaging technique but also the advanced forward reckoning technique which i hadn't seen with any other GPS ppc app. the track me map is great as well - if only i could get it to at least work in 2D (it does work well when it has a 3D lock) I'll try their support - hopefully, they'll responsd soon.

cheers

Hi LHR.

As far as I know, DGPS is not supported by BT-309.

I hope you can start using Tracky with your Garmin GPS, because IMHO, Tracky is a great offroad GPS-app.

Good luck!

Zumpen - after having reviewed several off-road apps - I was pleasantly surprised w/ Tracky - especially as I wanted strong tracking capability which my Garmin Mobile XT does, but not that great (too few tracking points) - with the "accurator" tool - it seems that tracky would produce excellent tracks.

Thks for posting your detailed review - that's what convinced me to download and try right away.

Already sent an e-mail to Tracky support - hope they'll respond soon.

cheers

LHR---
You mind copying the review into the "Off road" thread?
It would be a great addition

Tracky works pretty well on my Treo 700WX. My two complaints with it are lack of zooming features and its relatively high cost. Note, Ive just tried the trial version.

edit: I figured out how to zoom, but its not very intuitive
