I need a GPS for DRIVING

I have Axim x51v with WM6.

I saw many stand alone GPS units and I want my Axim to perform the same.

I want to say "Turn left after 3 miles" and I want it to tell me traffic and just about anything that a good $500 GPS unit does. I want to be able to attach to my x51v AND to attach to my car in some stable easy to see position!

Are all GPS units compatible with applications such as TomTom 7?

I have a 2Gb SD card and I am interested in US Maps only so it should fit (I hope???)

Or else I can download the map myself but I don't have WiFi available here.

So, what do I need?

Since WM6 is not officially supported on the Axim series, anything you buy will be a risk. In the US there is not much traffic reporting yet (if any), although it is common in Europe (for a fee). Get a mount to hold the Axim in place, there are dozens to choose from. The GPS receiver, if BT, will just rest on the dashboard. If CF, it will plug into the CF slot, if serial, it will plug into the bottom connector.

Not all GPS units work with TT. Older Garmin's are particularly difficult. Most of the rest should work, although TT is somewhat harder to set up than others, by report.

Depending on the application, 2Gig should work, but it'll be tight for some.

You need to do some reading in the reviews section here at Aximsite.

How about one that also recharges my Axim in my car?

You can get mounts that do that. Remember, though that the Ax takes a LOT of power, so make sure it can handle the load. There are reports of people having significant problems with screen flickering when the mount isn't properly rated for the power draw.

Again, there are reviews at Aximsite for you to read.

If you want to look at what's available, check buyGPSnow.com.

I have the X51v with WM6 and I use the following combination successfully. Arkon powered mount for Axim, Tom Tom 6 Navigator loaded on a 2 gybte CF card and it works great. I have the Western US, CA, AZ, Southeast and some city maps loaded with room to spare.

If you PM me, I'll be happy to tell you exact configuration. I bought the GPS through GPS Now and the Arkon mount from an Axim member but I'm sure you can get the same from eBay.
