Can one buy updated maps? OCN VS TomTom VS Iguidance

I have been using a "borrowed" copy of Iguidance3 and was pretty happy with it. Thougt I would buy the upgrade but I am told that you have to load all the maps on at once versus just the states you need? The same is true now with Tom Tom True?

I looking into OCN and they have the maps on a special SD card and I read that I could not load it onto my existing card. True?

I also read in the OCN forums that people were complaining about not haveing good rural maps and ocn said that they dont make the maps just the software and buy their maps from teleatlas. In that case could one just just the udpated maps from teleatlas?

How often to companies release updates for their software? Road closures etc?

Thank you

KM

Because your version is pirated, you are not eligible for an upgrade, you have to buy a new copy. You don't have to load all the maps at once, but you do use the PC version to select the maps you want to have in your mapset and you load all of them at once. But that is how it's always been for iguidance, so there isn't any change from what you've seen with your pirate copy.

True. To prevent software piracy, the security system is tied to the card, so it will not run on any other card.

No, typically the database vendors don't do direct retail sales. They sell to the software makers who pass it to you.

Varies. Some do monthly updates, some do 6 month updates. However, given the economics of the situation, most software vendors only update maps once a year, and the version they use is a couple of months old (if not older). The reason for the lag is that the vendors typically have to do some massaging of the raw map data to work with their map software, so it takes a while for them to get the data, do the massaging, get the disks printed/cards loaded and ready for distribution.

Well that wasnt helpful at all. Of course Captain Obvious my eval version is not eligible for an upgrade. I thought I would buy the NEWER version. Is that a bit clearer?

Where is your information coming from? Your answers also apparently have no propper reference.

This is from support@inavcorp.com

> And yes, started w/ v4, Map Loader is no longer available for loading
> regional/partial map.

Each purchase is for single license. You are thus licensed for perpetual
usage of the map included w/ your purchased license. However, if you wish
to upgrade to a newer version of map (which is released once a year), you
may purchase it at a discounted price of $79 as an existing customer. For
more information on map upgrade, please refer to
iNav - iGuidance OFFICIAL Upgrade Page.

OK, apparently iNav has changed. The pre-release review copy I had for iNav4 did, as I recall, allow for individual states, I gather they changed their minds for the final release candidate. Oh, well.

As for updating maps, the website terminology leaves something to be desired. Basically, if you read the full text of their website, what they are selling you for the $79 is not just a new map, but new software that may have with it new maps. Your original question was,

In that case could one just just the udpated maps from teleatlas?
and the answer to that is still, "no." Technically what you are buying from iNavCorp when you "upgrade to a newer version of map," in their terms, is to buy a totally new version of the software, at a discount as a returning customer, not just getting new maps. In fact, although they have in the past updated maps when they released new versions, there isn't any guarantee that in the future they will continue to do so. So an "upgrade" could end up with the same mapset as the previous release. Hasn't happened so far, but you never know...

I can confirm that iGuidance 4 requires you to install the entire north america map. I was quite upset about that, as I only have a 2 GB card, and that forced me to kick TomTom off my card. Previously, with version 3, I only had about 9 states.

With the version 4 release of iGuidance, the maps are continuous and you can't install just the ones you wish to use. iGuidaince will tell you that you'll need a 2 GB storage card that is devoted to maps. Looking at my storage card, it looks like the iGuidance stuff takes up about 1.2 GB.

I originally bought the previous version of IGuidance just a few months before version 4 was released, so I was eligible for an upgrade that only cost $10. The regular upgrade cost $79 was for licensed users.
