Im looking to get a gps but cant decide which one to go with. I borrowed my friend's TomTom and loved it. I have not tried out a Garmin yet but i hope to soon.
I would like to know your thoughts on the two of them.
Wow, I'm first to vote. I voted TomTom b/c it is easy to use, intuitive and packed with features. I have nothing against Garmin; I just love Tomtom. Good luck finding your software.
I have owned 3 Garmins. Thats what I like. 2 hand helds and the GPS10 for pocket PC. I like Garmin. Never used TomTom.

I vote Tom Tom then again, some users of iGuidance would swear by it. No personal experience with iGuidance though. TT6 works well on the x51v which I assume you'd install to.

I'd only give TomTom 6 an OK rating for the accuracy of their maps... Very usable but expect to find the actual address to be up to 50 meters from where TomTom reports, and dead-end and one-way streets aren't always reported.

Assuming that you're looking for a route (road) planning application, I would go for TomTom. If you want to go off-road, Memory Map would be my choice.
I have been using 3 GPS programs iGuidance4, TT6 and Garmin Mobile XT on my Axim X51v and each one has its pros and cons. Based on my experience, I'm listing them below and you can decide for yourself.
iGuidance: I think this is the best one in terms of use and ease but lacks some features that are available in the other two.
Pros: Announces the destination on which side of the road. A BIG help.
Easy to configure GPS with the port and Baudrate options.
Has access to the System Start Menu if we have to adjust the voice or turn on BT etc. and you can switch back to the GPS program. (You can use Switcher bar)
Best performance out of the three.
Cons: Not many POIs like in the other two. (A big drawback)
Maps are not that latest.
TT6:
Pros: Graphics interface is much better than iGuidance but performance is lacking behind. More POIs and better search by the POIs.
Cons: The worst thing about this is the interface. I have to quit the program if I have to adjust my spreaker volume or make BT connections (if I forgot to turn on). Also, to exit, you have to navigate through 3 pages of menu to get to the EXIT button and I hate it. GPS configuration is multiple fold and not simple as iGuidance and I don't like it. It doesn't announce which side of the road the destination is. This doesn't guide me all the way to my house though it shows and accepts my home address. It announces that I reached my destination on the main road itself and doesn't navigate all the way to my house which is about 1/2 a mile away from the main road. So there is some navigation issue with this.
Garmin Mobile XT:
Pros: This is the best graphics interface out of the three but VERY SLOW on my Dell Axim x51v. Navigation is good and has many options to search by POI categories. This is what I like in this program.
Cons: Slow performance and rerouting takes long time to calculate.
I noticed that some times it doesn't redraw the map though it keeps showing the speed, direction etc. and doesn't recalculate the route unless you try to go to the menu. That's something annoying and made me to stop using this program altogether on the Dell Axim. (I use this on my Tilt and works better)
I hope this gives some idea and you cane decide yourself.
Let me know if I can help with any more info.
Good luck.

I've recently switched from TomTom to iGuidance. I do miss the POI that TomTom had, but having more accurage navigation to my destination is more important to me. It isn't as pretty as TomTom but iGuidance works. I'm happy to have made the switch.

I'm still pretty partial to my TomTom because of the Tele Atlas maps. I haven't used iGuidance, but I know they have the same NAVTEQ maps as my sisters Garmin, and last time I drove with her, it got us lost in a part of Baltimore I didn't exactly want to be in
