I am currently using the Dell Navigation System with my Axim & have become very dissatisfied. I Tomtom really my only option? Should I also invest in another BT GPS unit?
1. The GPS location is not an exact science but the GPS is typically 50" off. I'll be driving down the interstate & sometimes the GPS software will show my location on a frontage road.
2. In the event of a detour or something the Dell System does not have a recalculate rounte function. I'll drive 3 or 3 miles down the road & it will tell me to make a u-turn.
3. I'll be driving down the highway & my next turn will be 15 miles. All of the sudden it will re-route me.
4. State highway sometimes wide & make turns through towns. You have to make some turns to say on the highway but the Dell software does not tell you about all these turns.
5. The software sometimes take 10 to 15 minutes to lock on the satalites. I have never had Mircosoft live take more than a few seconds. I notice this more when I travel & have to fly somewhere. In this case it takes forever to lock on the satalites.
6. In order to install more maps with Dell you have to reload all of the previous maps.
Will Tomtom resolve some of these issues?

Reason: needed to add something.
I'm certainly not a GPS navigation expert and I don't have the Dell Navigation system, but I'll give you my opinion:
#1 You say 50", I assume you mean 50 feet or yards. Anyway, this has more to do with the maps than the software. I've had this show up on I95 in SC and friends have a Nuvi with the same issue in that area. It could also have to do with your speed.
#2 Recalculations will be based on the local area. IF there's no other way it will tell you to make a U turn. Sometimes it takes a few miles to make the recalculation. I have one shortcut I take in NC that keeps tell me to turn around, then calculates to another road, then wants me to make a U turn again, then finally figures out the road I'm on is shorter than the original route.
#3 Can't help you there, I've never had the problem.
#4 I've only had this problem in one town in NC. And, the road was well marked. I've also had the opposite problem where it tells me a trun is coming up and it's only a bend in the road. I guess it depends on the maping.
#5 I've never had mine take more than a minute to get sync'd.
#6 I have to do the same with my iGuidance program. That's why they recommend you install all the maps. Of course, at the time I only had a 1Gb SD card and it needed 2Gb to load all the maps. I basically loaded everything from the midwest to the east coast. If I go out west I'll load those maps at that time or buy a 2gB card and load everything.
Not positive TomTom will resolve all these issues. It is very good navigation software. I'd suggest doing some searches for the different navigation programs and see which one fits your needs best. iGuidance probably isn't the best, but it met my needs for cost and capabilities.
Hope this helps a little. :)

1) If you mean the GPS is often 50 feet off, TomTom has this same problem. Actually, I would say TomTom is actually WORSE than the Dell Navigation software for this.
2) Detour. The Dell maps are several years old so road construction info isn't in the maps. TomTom would be no different, it thinks you drove past were you should have turned and will continue to ask you to turn around. At some point where a new route can be calculated, it will. But, this will depend on your settings, such as specifying finding the fastest, most direct, etc route.
3) Rerouting. I haven't seen this problem.
4) State Highway. I haven't seen this problem. It may be because of older maps and your settings (fastest, most direct route, etc)
5) 10 to 15 minutes to lock on the satelite. I believe this is more a function of your GPS than the software. I replaced my Dell bluetooth GPS with an OnCourse one that is MUCH faster at locking into the satelites.
6) Reload all of the previous maps. I have enough memory to load all of North America onto my CF card. TomTom provides prebuilt maps of different regions. You can load these region maps or a larger map. It is faster than the Dell process of building a new map file with the additional maps you want.
What I have seen is:
1) TomTom gives you newer maps (a big plus!)
2) TomTom maps are regional so you can load a block of states/provinces at once.
3) TomTom is less accurate than Dell, it gets you close, keep your eyes open for the real address!
I'm now using iGuidance. Same interface as Dell, they are about to release new maps for PPCs.

I use both a TomTom ONE 3rd edition and the Go 930. Since getting the 930 I've given the ONE to my sister to replace her older Garmin, but the maps are really accurate for me. As long as you keep your maps updated, TomTom is about as good as it gets. The feature I like most about the new TomToms is the Map Share. It's good for keeping updated on road closings construction areas. Definitely one of the perks they offer :approve:

But you aren't comparing apples to apples. The TomTom One is a dedicated GPS device. jadesse was asking about running TomTom software on his Axim. Not sure why and what the differences are but the maps for the PPCs are different than the onces for the dedicated TomTom devices. At least, they aren't interchangeable... :(
I'll probably just end up buying Tomtom or Copilot. I have read some pretty good things about Copilot but obviously Tomtom is the most well known. The Dell Navigation Maps that I have are fairly old from 2004. Morr than anything else I just want have updated maps but want to dump the Dell stuff. Copilot loads the maps on a micro-SD. Would it be possible to copy the maps onto a larger SD card?

I decided to purchase Copilot Live 7 & that turned out to be a big mistake. I took 15 minutes for the software to find my location & when it did. My sub-division didn't even show up. This can't be good considering my Dell maps are over 3 years old & they show my address. The Copilot maps may not be as detailed but I don't know. It makes you wonder what else they are missing. Luckily for me I have a 30 day money back guarantee so it will be going back. Now I am back to square one.
Does anyone know how old the Tomtom 6 maps or Garmin Mobile XT maps are? Would anyone happen to know when Tomtom 7 is coming out? I have read that Touch Diamond overseasare shipping with Tomtom 7 pre-installed. I don't want to buy 6 if 7 is around the corner.
I'm not sure what differences 7 will have over 6, but, TomTom does allow you to purchase updated maps. That's one thing my iGuidance doesn't do that I'd like to have.

Garmin is out because the maps cannot be copied onto a larger memory card. This can be done with Tomtom. I just don't want to buy tomtom & find out there are new maps. Then have to shell out more money.
Then, I'd contact TomTom directly to see how old the maps are with the latest software. From my experience they tend to be at least a year old when you get them. Most of the mapping companies do their updates once a year and pass them along to the software companies. Then, they put them in their latest products and/or sell them as map upgrades.

I believe that Garmin just came out with a map update. I updated maps on my standalone Garmin unit recently, and thought that I saw that the Garmin XT program came with the same version of the maps. They are calling it a "2009" version, but, of course the maps are a year or more old when they come out (not to mention that 2009 isn't here yet!).

I confirmed with them that the maps cannot be copied to a large memory card. So, that is a deal breaker for me. The Garmin software does have some really nice features though. I just sent Copilot Live back & ordered Tomtom Navigator 6.
I know I'm a bit late to the party, but for future reference I thought I'd let you guys know you can always check to see what updates are out there for all the platforms by checking out Tele Atlas's map update store :approve:
