It will work better with a GPS connected, because it has a start/current location, and maybe you were last in Canada.
Where the maps are stored could be a problem, did you erase them when you hard reset, or do you have them on an SD or CF card.
Do you perhaps need to reinstall them from a CD.
Have you checked that you are in the right region.
With some software you need to try to set a nav point but while doing that change the region/country, then you need to restart the application to move to the other maps.
The dell software is like that. It will only give me German addresses until I change region, through the search for an address page, then restart.
