Sorry, this has probably been covered a million times.
I'm looking into a GPS for my Dell Axim and I've been looking around here and now I'm more confused.
I looked at the Garmin 10 or 10x, but they don't seem to have maps for Western Canada (Alberta mainly).
I want a powered mount for my truck, probably a Blue tooth GPS receiver... I don't need anything super fancy, just good maps, a turn by turn with street numbers would be nice...
First, Welcome to Mobilitysite. Lots of good info & ppl here.
I currently use a Holux GR-271 CF card receiver with iGuidance, with an Arkon mount. Based on today's prices, $60 for the receiver, $100 for the software and $20 for a 2Gb SD card. The powered mount for the X50/51 series are on sale these days. You should be able to pick one up for about $10. :)
Ps - Check out the BuyGPS Now WEB site. They've got some nice bundles and you get a discount as a member of this site. :approve:

Thank you for any advice you can give.
For abt $125 you can pickup a BT rcvr and OCN 8 2gb sd card that works
with 51v.
If you're going to get a bundled deal from BuyGPSNow, you may want to ask if they have a powered mount in stock. They may just not be advertising them.

So I've found these, will this combo work well?
you'll need to add the buygpsnow .com/ infront as I can't post links yet.
Mount:
oncourse-pda-powered-cradle-mount-with-integrated-speaker-for-axim-x50-v-and-x51-v-720.aspx
Receiver:
GlobalSat-BT-368i-SiRF-III-Bluetooth-GPS-Receiver-BT368i_989.aspx
^-- or maybe the Holux M1200
Software:
oncourse-navigator_64.aspx
^-- other than the size of the card is there a reason to choose the 4GB over the 2GB? Are the maps better?
The cradle mount is the same one I used to have. That's Edition 1. I strongly suggest getting the Second Edition. I know it's $10 more, but I went thru 2 first editions before they finally gave me a second edition at no extra cost. Mine was a heading issue where it caused my AX to get warm and then it would shut off automatically after about a hours use. buyGPSnow is very reputable and will take care of any problems.
I'm not familiar with the receiver. But, it gets good reviews. You might want to do a search thru the GPS threads to see if there are any comments.
OnCourse is a good GPS software program. As for the 2Gb or 4Gb, I'd go with the 2Gb. Without going into great details, your AX may not recognize a 4Gb card. I believe the maps are the same, it's the POI listing that's bigger. You might have to do a Google search to get specifics. As I mentioned, I use iGuidance and it gives my all the turn to turn directions I need. The POI database isn't real big, but, it does what I need it to do.

Ahh I didn't see the edition 2, they're out of stock on it....
I did the sdhc driver on my Axim and it sees an 8GB SDHC card as a 4gb.. POI aren't a huge deal to me.. would be nice... so the 2Gb would be enough okey dokey..
Just need to ask if they can get the edition 2 powered mount instock...
Well, I'd say go for the deal with the Edition 1 holder. Just keep an eye on how warm your PDA gets. If it keeps shutting itself down to protect the PDA it means the AX is getting too warm in the holder.
Also, get the Universal mount CM929- S that comes free with the receiver. I use mine quite often 'cause my AX has a defective connector that makes using the powered mount difficult at times.
And, don't forget to use your Mobilitysite discount. :)

It could be. I went thru two of them. And, others had mentioned having the same problem in the forums. It's my understanding not everyone had the problem. I'm speculating here, but, mine might have been caused by the fact that my GPS receiver is a CF card and not BT. I wanted mine to be an all-in-one so I could use it on the golf course and walking around in a city. I have different software for those uses. :exc:
If there's no discount, those items must be on sale. But, bottom line, you'll get your GPS setup for less than $100. That's pretty good. My whole setup was just over $100. And that's pretty cheap. :)
Good luck with your setup. :approve:

Just under $100 USD that is... by the time it gets to my door it'll be just shy of $200CAD I could buy a stand-alone GPS for less than that up here, but I don't use my Axim as much as I want to so heh.
I was talking with my wife a while back about getting a GPS her reply was "Why? you know where youre going." and typically I do.. then I thought, well if I do get lost I guess a compass would work to get me un-lost. The only "real" reason I need a GPS for directions is for the odd street that's named not numbered in the primary city I drive in. Or if I go down to Calgary. Other than that it would be just a toy.
You maybe onto something about the CF GPS... the Ax would be pulling more juice then, so I could see it running warm.. I suppose I could use the vent mount option and turn on the AC :P
Sorry to bump my own thread, but I'm getting work to pay for this and finally got approved.
buygpsnow doesn't have any of the oncourse powered mounts in stock.. I found an arcon(sp?) and a i.trek powered mount elsewhere.. but was just wondering if you fine people could help me out with what would be a good mount?
In thinking about it, I would like a mount I can turn sideways and use a suction cup system and mount the PDA above my rearview mirror.
