It's been fun...

Last Spring I bought the X5 and Pharos/Ostia for the purpose of quickly finding addresses in connection with my employment. I wanted something small, yet functional. I had no use for a PDA per se. I'd used Garmin products on the boat and in the plane, but the StreetPilot was too bulky, I like the idea of a nice looking flat screen display to hang in the Suburban. Financial success in my career depends on using my time as efficiently as possible. The only reason I purchased the Pharos/Ostia system was because that's what Dell sold. The Pharos/Ostia system turned out be worthless. So next, I bought the PocketMap software, keeping the serial GPS receiver. I would have purchased the Mapopolis system, but darned if I couldn't figure out what to buy or not buy with the info displayed on their home page. I also bought I Rhino hard case, 256 SD and CF memory cards and a spare battery. The bucks spent on this project really began to add up.

From reading posts here and on the GPSpassion site, none of the PDA based sytems have anything close to 100% reliabilbity day and day out. My experience was no different despite super efforts from various folks in different tech support offices.

Recently I began testing the Garmin Street Pilot III and 2610. As in their Marine and Avionics products, the performance of the Garmin mobile GPS units far exceed anything my PDA could do. I would have tested Garmin's PDA, the i3600, but it wasn't available when I began my testing. I finally settled on the Street Pilot III since it would function on batteries, had a BNC antenna connector, and had a NMEA 0183 output. So, the Dell and PMN software are on eBay and my visits to Aximsite will end. Looking back, costwise, it would have been less expensive to buy the Garmin in the first place. I guess that's why it's called hindsight.

I'd like to say thanks for all of the help, especially from Jake, I've received via this site. It's been fun.

I think you'll find the Garmin isn't 100% accurate, either, but if it works for you, that's good. Not everybody wants/needs a PPC, but for those of us who use the PPC in our everyday work, the fact that there are some pretty good GPS packages out there makes it even more useful. If you want/need a dedicated GPS unit, and are willing to spend the bucks for a single purpose machine, then Garmin makes some nice equipment.

Come back and tell us how it goes. We're always happy to hear from GPS users of all sorts!

Have fun!
