GPS map update

Well I am finally getting GPS for my Axim. It looks as though any CF based receiver that is WAAS enabled should do the trick. The software on the other hand is not as easy.

I installed a demo of Mapopolis and I am only somewhat impressed. The POI info was whoafully out of date. It looks as though the Navtech provides the maps and POI info. My question then is there an another company with more up to date POI and road info. Or is the demo maps just not keep up to date. Also how often do the companies update the POI info. I have roads near me that have stores and retaurants that have been there for four years that don't show up on the Mapopolis/Navtech maps.

Routis doesn't seem to have a demo but the screenshots from the website seem to be better than Mapopolis. I don't really care for the 3D stuff though...

Lot's of questions! Any suggestions?

No POI database has EVERY restaurant or POI in it. Don't let POI be the deciding factor because no matter what you get, you won't be happy.

I know that there will now be post after post about how wonderful "brand x" is with POI. Some ARE better than others, but none of them is either complete or totally accurate. And as soon as you buy it a new restaurant will open, or one will close, and the POI database will be out of date.

Bear in mind, the general purpose for PDA software is for driving in new areas, so the fact that there IS a restaurant at exit 55 is more important to most drivers than WHICH restaurant.

Yep you are correct. Most of the time that is the case.

I have pretty much settled on either Routis or Mapopolis. Does Navtech provide maps for both companies?

I bought the Routis software and a powered holder last week for the Axim and used it for the first time this past weekend. I'm very impressed with the way it performs. It found POIs and addresses here in SC and re-routed me very quickly when I deliberately went off-course. The female voice is clear and gives ample warning before all turns.

I have been using a Deluo GPS with Routis and a powered windshield mount for about a month now and I never get lost anymore. So far I am very pleased with it.

Navtech does provide the map database for both Routis and Mapopolis. Both do well. Personally, I prefer Mapopolis, but it's a close call. Routis is an excellent package.
