256 or 512 SD ???
The Aximsite members have saved me a lot of heartache by preventing some blunders on my part that would have otherwise occured. Thankyou.
I've ordered my X5 :D . Today I'll probably order the rest of my CF GPS configuration :D . After much reading, pondering and back-forth I've decided to go with Mapopolis as my map program. Among other things, Mapopolis doesn't appear to be the memory hog that Routis is. It was a tough decision.
Now I'm trying to decide what size (Japanese) SD card to buy. The price of 512MB SD cards bothers me because based on the differential pricing of smaller SD cards they seem, in most cases, way overpriced.
For primarily west coast maps, do I really need a 512MB SD for Mapopolis? Would it work to buy two 256MB SD's and store maps on both or should I bite the bullet and get a 512?
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Afford it or need it?
Like my kids say..Duh...;)
I'm looking for advice, not just stating the obvious :). Anybody have a 256 SD X 1 or X 2 working reasonably well with a limited number of Mapopolis maps? Is the only drawback of 256 X 2 vs 512 X 1 the manipulation of the cards?

maps for mapopolis are very small, 256MB would be more than enough to cover large area, I think whole state and more.

Depending on what you need to store, you should be able to have a few states on a 256mb card with no problems.
I have all the major roads, the 6 New England states and the state of New York on one 256 card, and it's only using 102.8mb, or less that 1/2 the capacity.

I'm using Mapopolis in the bay area with a 128mb sd card, and I still have room left on the card. I only loaded the northern counties of the state though, I think the LA one is largest...point is you can get by with a 256, but it never hurts to have extra space, I'd stay away from scandisk... I got a simpletech on ebay for 30.00 works great!!

I have a 256mb sd card and using Routis I can get the whole state of Texas and Oklahoma on the card, the routis program, and have some room left for almost 70mb of mp3's, a pocket dictionary and a surplus 12mb of memory. Of course like the other guys said, pc, pda, whatever, you never have too much memory.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I sprang for a SimpleTech 512MB SD.

good choice. though i think Kingston has been selling its 512s for around $150 and recently they had a rebate that took it to $135. Some of their cards are made in Taiwan, but they have Japanese serial numbers and pass all of Happycheesecake's tests.
I would recommend Kingston's 512 SD at around $150 (if that is still the current price; check kingston's website--they sometimes have really good deals) as the best price point for reliable 512MB SD cards. I haven't really been fishing, though, so you may find somethign cheaper and/or kingston's price may have gone up....

Thanks for the scoopage. I didn't see a 512 SD Kingston rated at the Happycheesecake SD link and one of the two listed had a problem. I went with SimpleTech because I could not find any associated reports of Axim related problems. It cost $228 from Newegg with a $20 rebate. A few more peso's for a little more peace of mind.
