I was looking for a GPS application that had a world map (terrain or maybe major roads) with lakes, oceans, mountains, etc...

All the applications I have seen so far center around streets and driving. Is there a free application so you can pinpoint where you are on a global scale?

Take a look at GPSDash (http://gpsdash.com).

It is shareware, but very inexpensive -- and the unregistered version runs with no time limits (some limits on kinds of data you can save).

It comes with a world map, though not a great or very detailed one. But it is incredibly easy to add maps to it:

You find the map you want. If it isn't a .jpg already, you have to scan it. You put it on your Dell. You tell GPSDash that you have added a new map. You locate two points for which you know the longitude/latitude coordinates, and put them into the program. Then GPSDash will calibrate the whole map to those two spots. (If you physically can get yourself to the two places, you can have your GPS give the coordinates to GPSDash automatically).

I've used this programming feature with a topo map, and it worked very well.

OziExplorer has one. Not great detail, but its free. There is even an OziCE program.
