Looking into GPS Options

Hello fellow Aximsite dudes/dudettes.

I'm looking into purchasing a new GPS system for my car. I did a bit of research but I wanted to get some feedback as to what setup worked for you guys.

Here's my conditions:

- want a GPS system that has good direction/location stuff for when I'm driving on the road

- don't want to clog up my CF slot with GPS adapter (maybe something that can plug into the SYNC slot)

- maybe something wireless like Bluetooth (again without taking up the CF slot)

- good software for the above conditions

If you have any screenshots of recommended software or GPS units, please post 'em as it's always great to see the cool stuff Aximsite people can come up with. Links are helpful too :)

Anyhow, appreciate any help you guys can offer and Hurray! for another Aximsite.com year

Well if you don't want to use your CF slot them a serial mouse GPS is your only solution as a bluetooth gps would take up your CF slot since you'd have to use a bluetooth CF card ..

I like the Haicom MMF, which can be either a serial or a CF GPS. I thought I would use it as a serial gps, but now that I am playing with it, I prefer the CF mode (fewer wires in the car, no loose pieces flopping around). This way, you are covered if you change your mind.

As for mapping software, everyone on this list has their own favorites. Mine is Destinator3 -- but most of us have made a decision to purchase only one, and have not played with the others.

As for the data they contain, I believe almost all of them get the data -- including the restaurants, gas stations, banks, points of interest information -- from the same source: Navtech. So the differences are in the interface and packaging and subtleties of the software.

Read what others have had to say on this list. I get the feeling that you would get what you want probably from any of the three favorites (Mapopolis, Routis, Destinator3).

The others have said enough and I dont need to repeat the info...but I would like to add one thing.

The CF GPS units are nice if you are going to ever want to walk around with the GPS unit. If you go external you will not have the capability.

Also, at first I felt the same as you, but finally went with a CF slot GPS unit because it seems like people have fewer problems with those devices working.

I have a 512 MB CF and it is very easy to swap the two devices at any time. I also bought a 256 MB SD card that I keep my maps on.

Good luck!

Kewl, just went over to Haicom.com and it looks like they have a really cool solution. They have a "Bluetooth Slipper" that you can hook their Haicom GPS CF card to thus making the whole thing wireless. In addition, you can plug the card in via the Sync slot or the CF Slot. Hurray!

Basically, I'm also counting on Dell to release there new Axim X5 with bluetooth (rumored ETA September).

Hiacom looks like the deal to go with, thanks for the input guys
