Newbee Needs Help

Hi, all

I had my Axim for a year now, yet I'm totally new to GPS. I don't even familiar with all the terms used here. Here comes my dumb questions.

0. First of all, what do I need to get started using GPS on my axim? I had pocket street for now.
1. What is a mouse GPS? From what I read, it's kind of GPS connecting to the hotsync cable of PDA. I think I like this over CF cards since I've already has a 512M CF sitting there.
2. In order to use the mouse GPS on Axim, do I have to buy some adapter?

mfphoto1 answered question 3, but you may find answers to your other questions in What Can I Do With My Axim?, see link in my signature below. Look at the section on GPS.

BTW, welcome to Aximsite! :D

I found the link in Gigi's signiture especially helpful. About the serial port type, is there a standard name for that in X5?

Well, a couple of more questions.

1. can I edit my message in this forum? I hate to post a new one incrementally. (sorry, found the button already). :D
2. batterywise, how the CF card receiver perform on X5?
3. for mouse GPS receivers, external power is needed according to what I read. attatch external battery power to the receiver?
4. in general, do I need a external antenna if used in car? I remembered one of my friends told me that his GPS had weak signal when used inside the car. He actually had to manually put the receiver outside to get enough signal.
5. If I buy a CF/mouse model, can I use a CF/PCMCIA adapter so that I can connect the GPS to notebook PC?

2. Maybe someone has done a more precise measurement, but I typically will get at least 90-120 minutes on the X5 with a CF GPS card running (make sure that you let the backlight dim after a relatively short interval to conserve power).

3. Yes, it needs a 12vdc source -- usually, a cigarette lighter jack.

4. You probably will not need an external antenna UNLESS your car has one of those "embedded" windshields (do a search on this forum for more info).

5. Yes, most CF GPS units will work in a notebook machine with the appropriate CF/PCMCIA adapter.
