TomTom Navigator Kit with Axim
Hello!
I live in the UK and have a Axim!!! Great device, very happy :)
I'm interested in buying a GPS system for it. I have read many reviews and believe the best GPS system for me would be the TomTom Navigator Kit. This includes the software and all the hardware needed to install into your car.
One slight problem. No cable has been developed yet to make it work with the Axim :( I don't really want to purchase any other device so my question is:
"Is there anyway I can get the two devices to work? Any adapter out there? Any other type of cable I can modify?"
I realise TomTom will most likely come out soon with a Dell Compatible cable. However, that could take months and I really want this toy....
Many Thanks to "csims" who has already given me some advice :)
If anybody can help I would be eternally grateful :)
Boyd

You're not alone, I've got exactly the same problem. The only advice I've been getting is to buy a compact flash GPS receiver for the Tom Tom software but I don't want to do that as I want to use the conpact flash slot for other things.
In theory the Dell serial lead could be used with a null modem to connect into a GPS that has a standard serial cable connection. But I've yet to find someone who can tell me for sure that X product has a serial connection and will work fine and you can buy it in the UK at Y shop
Let me know if you get anywhere with this

I'm not alone!
Thought I was the only one wanting this type of system.
I had heard that using a null modem with a Dell com cable etc might work but obviously I don't want to spend money on something that might not work.
Hopefully we'll work it out. If I find any helpful info out then I'll be sure to post it here. Thanks for your reply :)
Boyd.

Serial GPS cables for the Dell axim are availible for imediate delivery from Global Pocket PC Solutions. They must be used with the OEM serial GPS we sell. The DELL doesn't use serial communication through it's serial connector this is why there is such a delay in cables. The cables have a onboard USB to serial convertor to enable serial communication.

But surely I can use a serial cable purchased from Dell with any type of GPS that has a serial connection rather than limiting myself to your solution (which seems to come bundled with software and maps which I don't want). Could I buy just the GPS unit? Your website doesn't seem to have an option for this. And would your hardware work with other software?

Yes you can purchase the cable and GPS without software. We hope to have the website updated today. You can email us with a phone number to be contacted.
The serial cables from dell will not work.

Confused?
I have read a number of threads on here where they are using the Dell Serial cable with an external GPS and it works so what is the truth.

Will not work with what? The GPS product you are selling?
If so please state that clearly from now on.
The Dell Serial Cables work quite well with stand alone GPS receivers and the appropriate serial cable for the GPS, with null modem adapter.

Keep it coming!
Thank you to everyone who is replying.
Only problem is, I'm getting a little confused which product we are now talking about :rolling:
People are typing about a null modem adapter with a Dell Com cable, does that work with TomTom?
Does the cable which has a USB to Com adapter work with TomTom? Or are we talking globally about any type of GPS system?
We must be careful not to deviate off topic, otherwise my head spins round round baby round round.... lol.
Once again, many thanks to everyone who is either replying or at least passing information between users. Great to see the collective at work :)

pocketnav broke in trying to sell his products, not talking at all about what you were wanting to know. My apologies to you for trying to get him to clarify what he is talking about.

Pretec CF GPS
Have you seen the Pretec CF GPS + external aerial from Expansys. I just bought one to replace my Ipaq 3850/Ipaq Nav system. It cost £200 inc. VAT and delivery and worked first time. Much faster than the Ipaq. The TomTom Citymaps Europe 2003 and Autoroute 2002 included software work really smoothly.

Pocketnav is not trying to break in to anything we were asked to come here from some of our customers and we are just helping fill the gap on some information in regards to GPS receivers for the Axim. I thought I was very clear when I said it would not work. I'm not saying it can't be modified or something but we can't make any claim to that. We have been told by our supplier there is a specific voltage brought through the cable up to the adapter which is only used in these GPS receivers. This is all the information we have at this time. Many people are looking for a solution and people are having a tough time finding the cable a GPS solution.
Sorry if you are offended by people trying to help people.
