Which GPS Mapping Software to Buy
Hi, I have an Axim X5 ppc. So the receivers I mention may not work with yoyr model Axim. But, in my opinion, I would buy PocketMap Navigator as my GPS mapping software plus a Compact Flash BC-307 receiver. I have used that combination for over a year and overall I am very satisfied with it. Recently I bought Teletype GPS mapping software and their World Navigator receiver, overall so far, it is OK, but not as good as PocketMap. I say this because PocketMap speaks to you more information about the next maneuver you will need to make. 99% of the time it calls out all of the words on a highway entrance or exit sign. It gives you several verbal warning ahead of time before your next move. When it calculates you are at the destination, it says "you have arrived" (you might be off by 100 ft or less). With Teletype it only gives one verbal warning or visual warning (on the PPC screen). You have to look at the ppc screen and listen to the one verbal warning or screen warning. When it calculates that you are at the destination it says " nearing destination" (you might be off by 100ft or less too). PocketMap Navigator is much more user friendly (intuitive) than Teletype. Also the synthesized voices in PocketMap Navigator are more understandable. The voices in PocketMap do need to be improved though. The BC-307 receiver gets a position fix faster than the World Navigator receiver (patience is a virtue, which I lack). Neither user manuals are easily understood. It seems like they were written by the creators of the software and not by real life users. Teletype can be used on a laptop or ppc. It's user manual is in 2 sections - laptop and ppc. However, intermingles references between its use on a laptop and ppc. So when I read in the ppc section it tells me to look for a button that isn't on my ppc -confusing. It is easier to load maps from PocketMap Navigator to my Axim. Oh well, enough said. Both tech supports are satisfactory. I hope this helps you.
