walkabt...I downloaded the Mapopolis PPC software from their web site and some maps..<struggled to get the 8 counties to download because they only allow you 2 at a time ; had to use my neighbour's computer, used AOL acct...whatever to throw off their 2 map download limit> and got the route.
I tried the route yesterday in Mass & Connecticut. Here are some of my comments:
(A) I gotta admit ; I was pretty excited with the "accuracy". It appeared to be dead nuts accurate and the chime worked perfectly with every turn. All the exits came up clearly identified, the turns exact. Very impressive. Compared to Delorme's Steet Atlas for handhelds 2005 - this wins clearly. The Delorme software was off by 150 ~ 300 ft for ALL TURNS and EXITS...it made me believe that perhaps my GPS receiver was defective or something....not the case !!
(B) Re-directs worked very well. I took some exits to get coffee at a Dunkin' Donuts ; the voice asked me to make a U turn, going wrong way. After the coffee shop, I purposely went the other way forcing a re-route through Hartford, which it did very well, and brought me back to the highway 3.3 miles later !!
Things I didn't like were:
> The "goddamn VOICE"....it is worse than the Delorme voice - which I hated too (I described it as a "guys voice with a dead-end job"...no enthusiasm....but atleast he spoke American !!). The Mapopolis voice had a "German accent" or something...it was blend between a robotic voice and a German voice...VERY UGLY SOUNDING...it's GOTTA GO...or the SOFTWARE GOES...
> The Points of interest were not much to speak off...very limited, unless of course, it is available in the full version.
> The town names when you select, "do not have a state" W/ it. For example, I had to go to New London, CT ; but I clicked on Town of New London ; and Mapopolis made a route to New London, MA...I wish they had just put a state next to the all the cities and town names ; as here in New England, we have many cities and towns with similar names in different states.
Now, my friend, walkabt...you said something about...changing the voice to "crystal"...how do I do that?? There was no selection that I believe to change the voice ; only change it to how fast or slow the voice reads the instructions.
Let me know...I am almost sold on Mapopolis...love the accuracy ; the layout is decent - not spectacular, but I think I can live with it. But if I can change the voice ... I might just go for it.

P.S : Any way to get an evaluation copy of Destinator, PocketmapGPS or Tomtom USA ver 2.24??
Hi Vinnie, I'm forced to register to this forum after reading your experience with mapopolis.
About the 'sexy' voice issue, you change the voices with your own; if you have a sexy voice yourself!! There is a software for customizing the voices (also free).
I've used mapopolis (in europe), what I didn't like about it is the inaccuarte speed info and lack of 3d maps. Otherwise, it displays street names and pois with names.
I've used Garmin's Que and Mobile 10 software/GPS along with TomTom Navigator 5 & 6. IMHO, Garmin's Mobile 10 is the hands-down winner, and here's why.
To my knowledge only the Garmin software will allow you to plan a trip on your desktop PC and then transfer routes and waypoints to your PDA. You can of course, also plan your route directly on the PDA. Also, Garmin has its Traffic and weather service available for free. For me, planning a route via Mapsource on the PC and being able to transfer it to Mobile XT is the next best thing to sliced bread. :approve:
Why do people revive these 1.5 year old threads. I have not seen a post by vinniemak in a long time. I will admit this thread helped me figure out which program to ultimately buy, but the information in this thread is pretty dated. Mapopolis is a very good example, because the product has been discontinued.
As I can not use TomTom, iGuidence or any other type of GPS software due to NO maps for New Zealand.
I should have everything here by next week can't wait to give it ago, my in-laws also have GPS they have a Navman PiN 570 which is a Pocket PC WM 2003.
Have used this unit for close to a year now. Got the optional power cord to keep the Holux powered.
Great unit, in regards to its ability to hold to windshield. Sound is deff ok and louder than you'd hear directly from the Axim.
ONE PROBLEM THO: You possibly might experience a charging problem. Somtimes the unit will charge your Axim....... then again, it might not. I was forced to purchase an optional 12V ciggy adapt to charge my Axim when the Seidio decides to NOT charge. *extremly frustrating*
I have found that the Seidio seems to keep a charge best, when the Axim's darn near fully charged already......and then it seems to keep up with the chore of maintaining a working unit.
I've seen this exact problem reported in other threads. Do not expect Seidio to aide with any type of support, nor will they offer to replace the unit. I've just grown to live with this annoying quirk.
