X5, Garmin cf Que, and ArcPad

I have yet to see the Garmin cf Que 1620 mentioned in any threads. I bought it to use with ArcView's "ArcPad" software. The Garmin works as expected with the MapSource software that comes with it, but the ArcPad software can't seem to find the GPS unit. ArcPad allows me to set everything for the GPS unit, com port, baud, parity, etc., and allows me to "activate" the GPS. I have tried all of the com ports up to Com9, but still get no results. I get an "Error 55 when attempting to open communications port COM7" or any of the other ports I have tried except COM1, 2, or 3. The current settings I have been using are:

COM1 (or 2, or 3, or 5, or 7)
Baud 4800
Parity None
Bits 8
Stop Bits 0
RTS Enable
DTR Enable
Protocol NMEA 0183
GPS Datum WGS84
No GPS initialization string (maybe I need one!)

Does anyone have any suggestions to get ArcPad and the Garmin to talk to each other?

Garmin didn't use standard NMEA protocal. It use its own protocal.
I didn't ever use Arcpad, so I can't tell whether it can be use with 1620 cfque or not. You should check it if it can be change NMEA to something else.

Does not look good for getting your Garmin Que to communicate with ArcPad...see this thread on ESRI's ArcPad Users Forum. The problem is that the GPS and ArcPad aren't speaking the same language. ArcPad, from what I understand, does not support Garmin's interface protocol. Is it possible to change a setting on the Garmin so that it will output NMEA data instead of it's proprietary data format? You may want to try the FindGPS 1.0.6 - Autodetect GPS extension, but I doubt it will do anything for you.

Looks like you guys were right -- I tried FindGPS and it couldn't find the Garmin unit. Now the Garmin is going back to Amazon, then I'll have to see what I want to do next.

Thanks for the quick response.

If you plan on using ArcPad, then be sure to get a GPS receiver that supports one of these protocols:
  • NMEA 2.0
  • TSIP (Trimble)
  • Earthmate (DeLorme)
  • PLGR (Rockwell)
Furthermore, ESRI reports problems in ArcPad with serial GPS's and Axim's, but does not mention what Dell models are affected. Personally, I have had no problems using ArcPad with a Garmin 45XL(pretty old model, but works for me) connected by a serial cable(from supplynet.com) to my X5.
