Waiting on New Setup to Arrive

I will be the first person to make a post in this forum. That makes me the Jedi Master of this forum. (That's Sir Jedi to you young Jedi Knight!)

Well the whole reason I bought a PDA was for GPS purposes. I just ordered my Axim from dell. I got the 400 mhz version and ordered an optional car cigarette lighter adapter. It's the one that plugs into the Axim's power plug and not the port like some of the ones that I have seen on Ebay. I also orderd a 256 SD from another Vendor. Based on some bad experiences I'd read about between the Axim and the Sandisk, I ordered the Lexar brand. I'm going to next order the Holux GM-270 CF GPS and the Mapopolis software. I hope that I will not be disappointed. The only thing that worries me is the Microsoft operating system. I'll keep an open mind though. I will be getting rid of my Garmin V after using it for the past year. I will miss it but of course I won't get rid of it until the new setup proves itself. Well that's all for now young Jedi Knights... May the Axim Force Be With You....
;)

P.S. Anybody with GPS experiences (good or bad) feel free to chime in.

Hi Bucky, I just got the Holux GM-270 as well and like Jake said, you're going to LOVE it! I was thinking of buying the Ultra version but people on www.gpspassion were saying that it has some kind of a lag issue when updating the speedometer, and that it is really more suited to folks doing field research. So I just ended up getting the regular unit and it appears to be working amazingly with Mapopolis. I orderd the external antenna with it as well but I don't think I'll be using that too much as the Holux can get a fix on it's own in just a few seconds. Simply amazing!

Don't bother installing the GSPViewer program that comes with it as I've heard it is crap. Instead, load up these utils...

Leadtek Winfast Navigator(CE Monitor):
http://www.leadtek.com.tw/www/Web_Le....0%20Setup.zip

The util will let you input settings to your Holux. Use NMEA, COM port 5, and 4800 Bps. That should get you going.

After you get a fix, try out this program...

Have fun, and remember to keep your eyes on the road! :crooked:

Hey SpeedFreak...

I also ordered Axim 400 and got it 43 hours after I ordered it. I also got my Lexar SD. I am now waiting on my Holux. I got the regular version too as I read a couple negative things about the newer version with speed averaging. I had not heard anything bad about the standard model so I decided to go with it. I was gonna get the external antenna but decided at the last minute to see how it would do without the external unit. I may buzz you later on when I get my Holux if I have any questions if this is alright.

Feel free to drop me a note here or via private message if you need any assistance. I'd be glad to help out a fellow GPS jedi!

Incidentally, where did you order your Holux from? I got mine from Semsons with a 10% discount thru gpspassion.com's membership. I think that's a great way to support the site with a little incentive added for the users who join. I also got one of those hotsync/charger cables with a USB cigarette lighter adaptors. This way I don't have to worry about bringing different sets of cables whenever I travel. Now I just need a USB AC adaptor to go along with the cable... not to mention those nifty little retractable ones at www.boxwave.com.

Talk to ya later!

I got my Holux from Semsons off of Ebay. It was listed for $209 and nobody bid on it so I picked it up for $209.99. By the way this included Mapopolis Navigator also. I thought that it was a pretty good deal. That brings me up to about $600 for my Axim GPS setup with all the goodies so far. That sounds like a lot I know but I paid about $500 for my Garmin V last year and the related software and I think this setup will be a whole lot better for a $100 more. The proof will be in the pudding though.....
