Thanks for your input Commoved. Well, the Ax obviously has USB data and power capability thru its base connector. Electronically, Its a matter adapting the USB connector to accept a male equipped device as in the case of the Earthmate. I hoping that Delorme and or Dell will come thru with the proper driver to access the data lines. In the meantime I am going to try to get to the code in mssync to see how it works. Thanks agn, mikle@gnomaad

y dont you just use some velcro then you could remove it easly and i would only cost about $.25

I had this same problem so I bought her one also. Not only do I have mine back but I seem to be able to get any upgrades I want now!
Apparently I inadvertantly started a new thread instead of replying to to commoved. The following was intended to be the reply:

Hey hope some one reads this (thats what it is here for right?)
I am an over the road truck driver in need of a good program to get me from point a to point b (and c,d,e,f...) here are the parameters for what i need.
1: a program that allows me to create routes on the p/pc
2: a program that will allow me to see street level maps of cities tiows, blah blah blah...
3: a program that will alloow for future additio0n of a cf or SDIO gps unit.
i have been looking at the "x map" program from delorme and it seens to be the only one to have the route creator on the p/pc instead of importing it premade from a desk/laptop.
Any cfritism or help would be greatly appreciated>
I bought DeLorme's Xmap Street Atlas Handheld Edition for my Ipaq 3950 pocket pc. It will allow you to create a route. However, .... if for some reason you get off the route, it does NOT reroute you. You are simply out of luck. For this reason, (and others) I no longer use Xmap Street Atlas Handheld Edition. I'm using Mapopolis now and I'm VERY happy with it. Let me point out that I'm using the Navigator version of Mapopolis which allows 'active' guidance (rerouting and voice). If you get off route, Mapopolis will know it and reroute you all within 7 seconds. It also displays names of upcoming roads at intersections. A real nice feature. And true-heads-up display.

Mapopolis lets you define a route right on the PPC! Theres not even a desktop version of the software. You pick your start and destination, and GO! Your off! Done deal! Get there!
If you dont know where your at, you can just click GPS POSITION for the start. :-) You STILL get there!
I agree totally, anything less than the Navigator pack for Mapopolis and your cheating yourself. Come on, $99 for all the maps, including POI and major roads, you cant go wrong! Works like a champ!

Actually the Place Guides (POI) are a separate subscription for $25. There are some (minimal) points built into the Navigator MapPack, but if you really are looking for a restaurant, gas station, etc... you need the Place Guides.
Yeah, the POI is seperate, but extreamly cheap... I made an error. But the map pack does come with major streets. Interstates and highways.
From what the lady at Mapopolis said on the phone, you can only load enough maps to reach 20 million in population, a limitation that Navtech put en place. By loading major street maps, the population count for them are zero so you can still travel without having to load every county etc.. between start and destination.
First I just want to say that I am new to the Dell Axim. Actually I dont even have it yet (Just ordered it yesterday). I'm an old Palm IIIx user. Anyway, I was thinking of getting a CF GPS for my Dell, but I already have a Garmin e-map that I use for Mtn Biking and in the car. From what I have been reading, it seems that you can connect a regular handheld GPS to a Dell Axim. I've tried Googling for some sites that may sell the cable but have had no luck. Does anybody have any links to where I could get a cable to connect to the Dell? I dont know if this helps, but I have a regular serial cable for my Garmin that connects my Garmin to my laptop via serial port. Maybe I can use this same cable and just buy some kind of adapter that will let it fit my Axim 5? Thanks in advance for any help. By the way, this site is awesome!! Everyone on here seems very knowledgeable and willing to help. By reading this board, it helped me realize that the Axim will fit my needs perfectly and for little $$.
Hey Joe, I have the garmin IIIplus which I intend, eventually, to interface w/ my Ax. There a couple places that make an all-in-one cable that powers both units and interfaces data as well - for under $30.. I'll hunt them up and get back to you. cheers, mikel
Thanks Mikle. I eventually found a couple of sites that sold the cables, but they were around 50 or 60 bucks. That seems a little steep for just a cable. 30 and under sounds better. Definately keep me posted if you find the cables at a good price. I'll do the same.
Look at the GEAX5 cable ($29.40 + shipping) from PC-Mobile. I don't believe you can download waypoints from the eMap to the Axim with this cable, but everything else should work.
