latitude & Longitude

Hi,

GPS newbie question.

I bought a Dell Axim x50v with the Dell GPS Navigation System. I also have Microsoft Streets and Trips 2004. My problem is I want to go GEOcaching and don't see any way to enter the latitude & longitude to map to the coordinates? So what am I missing?

You can get all the information you want and more at http://www.geocaching.com . E.g. here's what they say is geocaching:
"Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. "

Tip(s) for those wishing to Geocache with your beloved PDA.
A. Backup before going out.
B. Invest in something like an Otterbox
C. If you really get into Geocaching, invest in a rugged outdoor unit and leave the PDA in the car.

Geocaching comes off as totally geeky, but it's super fun and you'll discover new places right where you live. Read up on the ".gpx" file format. Also, check out GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) and GPX Sonar. Those are for the PC and PDA, respectively.

I can't get GPX sonar to load GPX files (loc). It keeps telling me "empty GPX file". Any ideas?

Speaking of the GPS Sonar problem could someone post a working GPS file to try with GPS Sonar? I don't understand why the files downloaded from geocaching.com fail?

I have the dell gps and software also, and have yet to find a way to enter coordinates using it :P

I have been using VitoNavigator 2 lately, but I don't like it how it won't let you switch to another program, always has to be on top... any other suggestions?

Hi,

I have the Pharos GPS with Ostia software. I have to enter lat/long input under "Store Favorites" and then call it up as a 'Destination.' Then I 'Find' it by calling up the 'Favorites' from there. It's a cheesy way of doing it, but at least I figured that out one day when I was having a heck of a time 'Geocaching.' I was driving/walking around watching the numbers get closer, closer, and then far away!!! That drove me crazy until I learned to enter lat/long input. Have fun!

We have a question for you, if you don't mind me asking. I am totally new to GPS systems.

We would like to purchase a GPS unit to include software in order to assist us in finding a certain coordinates for a piece of land that my family has to save us in paying a surveyor to locate the exact locate of this land. We use to know but the landmark is now gone. We do have a map that has the long/lat on it so now we need the GPS unit and software to go and locate this piece of land.

We have also heard the Pharos GPS with Ostia software has its pros and cons just like everything else but it when searching for something the numbers get closer, closer, and then far away. We heard Pharos was the first PDA GPS. Pharos is named after the infamous ancient lighthouse in Egypt and inspired by the tradition of navigation technology, Pharos Science and Applications, Inc. has been developing location-based technology since 1998 for info you can check out this web site. http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/G...etooth_GPS.htm

We are thinking about the DELL GPS Navigation System but we heard that we are unable to enter coordinates into the system. This is what we need to do the most since we have the long/lat numbers also we need to be able to use the mapping portion of the software and be able to program the buttons as well enter this information into favorites, if need to be for future references.

We have also heard and read that VitoNavigator 2 will not let you switch to another program and wants to remain on top. This is differently out of the question for us to use.

Would you know any good GPS unit and software that we can us our Dell Axim 5 or suggest something that will work for us?

We would greatly appreciate your help and expertise and thank you for your time.
