iGPS-180 Receiver - HELP Axim X5

I just got the Pharos "iGPS-180" (hardware only) and am trying to use Streets and Trips 2005 for the software, but the gps never finds a sattelite. I believe it needs to be "enabled" with the Ostia software which i don't have. How can I run/get a trial copy of "Ostia" just to enable my GPS and use MS Streets and Trips 2005 instead???

Can some please help?, would be most appreciated

I don't have one, but I think the iGPS-180 is a CF receiver, and should not require "enabling" to work. Just insert it into the CF slot, start your software and set it to the COM port for the CF card. You didn't say what kind of PDA you have, but for the X5 that should be COM 5 or 6, for the X50 series it may be COM4.

If you can't find it, download the free utility from Haicom and let it search for the GPS, then note which COM port it's on and set MS S&T to look at that port.

Thanks Jake.

It's an X5 and not CF one, It connects to cradle connection at buttom. Avail com ports are 1-4, all can't connect to it. I believe i need software from pharos to "enable it" and then i can use other software like streets/trips 2005. Anyone has utility or software to enable this gps?

Thanks

Anyway I can borrow that software for a minute to simply enable my GPS?

Jerry

Ok, I had checked at the Pharos site and it says it's a CF receiver. Oh, well.

If it's serial, it will be on COM 1, every time.

Download the ARM version of this utility. (It's called a Testing progrm). Use it to make sure the unit is communicating.

Follow this sequence:

1. Connect the serial unit to the power supply for it. (If it is serial, it MUST have an external power supply. The Axim does not supply power for serial units.)
2. start the GPS software on the Axim. Get it looking at COM1.
3. Plug the cable into the bottom of the Axim.

It should then appear in the utility software as connected through COM1.

To switch to the Navigation software, disconnect the cable from the Axim, stop the utility software (really stop it, not just with the X, but through switcherbar or whatever you use). Start the nav software, get it looking at COM1, then plug the receiver back in. It should then be found.

Make sure you follow that sequence faithfully. If you start the GPS and plug it into the Ax before the GPS software is running, Activesync will see the data and interpret it as a request to sync, start the protocol and then hang up because it never gets the proper reply. The Ax will slow to a crawl and you may even have to soft-reset to get it back. If you start the Map software first and get it looking at the port for the receiver data, it will block the COM1 port from Activesync and you can plug it it without fear of the hangup.

Have fun with it!
