Question CF Card or Garmin

I just purchased my Axim X5. I will be using it in my farming operation for filed scouting and record keeping. May also use as a rate controller with GPS tied in. I am thinking my best route would be to purchase a Garmin with WAAS for accuracy. I would also require an external antenna. This would allow me to also use the GPS with my laptop. Am I headed the right direction? I know I will be dealing with a cable but think this will be better than CF for versatility. Do most Garmin's support external antenna's?

Are you going to be in densely wooded area's, low lying areas, or in a city with alot of tall buildings where you won't get good satellite reception?

If so then get one that uses an external antenna. The only one that I can think of off the top of my head is the GPS 12XL.

It's $194 at GPS4fun.com

You might want to look into some other models, but I think that the 12XL is going to be the cheapest that has external antenna capability.

GPS4fun also carries all the accessories you'll need too.

Using in vehicle

I will be using it inside tractor cabs when doing the contolling. That is the reason for external antenna.

That's a real good reason.

The nice thing a GPS4fun is that they list in the GPS features if they can use an external antenna or not. Takes alot less time than researching manufacturers sites.

GPSPassion.com has reviews as well. I find that my Magellan Meridian picks up satellites very well just on the dashboard of my car, through the glass. I've never needed an exernal antenna. There are CF units that use external antennas. The unit from Teletype has an external antenna with a magnet in the base that works well. The software is not as good as others, but the receiver was nice.

The best reason for a standalone unit is the weather and dust exposure you will be facing. The Magellans and Garmins have waterproof and water resistant models that should be durable in your application. The Axim could be kept in one of the armored boxes like the Otterbox, but you might would have to open the box to use the GPS. That should be ok, as long as you do something to protect the Axim. Even a zip-lock plastic bag would provide some protection from the water and dust. A big ziplock bag with a CF card all sealed inside might be a cheap way to go.
