Microsoft Streets&trips with Holux CF GPS

I was planning on getting the Holux CF GPS in the next few days. I am currently using Streets & Trips 2000 on my Axim. I plan to upgrade to Streets & trips 2003 before I get the GPS. My question is does the Microsoft Streets & Trips work fairly well with a GPS? I am only interested in the use for say vacation planning and just general use. Should I be ok with this software? I just don’t feel like shelling out a bunch of cash for these professional grades mapping software.

S&T is a good general mapping software. The drawbacks on GPS use are: 1. No route planning on the PPC. It simply doesn't do that, nor does it transfer routes from the PC to the PPC. 2. GPS updates your position only every 15 seconds. You can go a long distance in 15 seconds. However, if you have the route printed out from the PC and just want to track along, maybe 15 second updates are ok.

Hmm, I am not sure but I may want to use a point to point planning. I am not sure to be honest. I do agree you can travel a good distance in 15 sec time.

What software would you recomend using for the handheld?

I have a laptop but i am not sure if I would be using it for GPS. I dont think the CF card I am looking into can addaped to a PCMICA card, and I dont wish to shell out more bucks for a seperate GPS. I want the CF card over the wired ones.

I notsed Delome has an Xmap made just for PPC 2002. any feed back on this?

I didn't like Xmap. The maps were out of date and inaccurate, the route planning was, to be kind, bizarre, and the screen slow to redraw.

I also have recently reviewed Teletype World Navigator. It's in the review section on this board. It had some shortcomings as well.

The best mapping I have seen for GPS is Mapopolis. It's lightning fast, the routes are as good as I've seen, and the Platinum Plus will give you door-to-door driving directions on screen for the entire US for $45. If you want voice directions, you have to step up to $100. The software is free. Re-routing is very quick, almost to the point of being instantaneous. I made a wrong turn deliberately in testing and before I had gotten half a block it had a new route for me all plotted and ready to go. It does fall somewhat short on Points of Interest (museums, restaurants, banks, hotels, etc), and it doesn't do waypoints (A to B to C) but as a mapper of A to B it can't be beat. What I want from a navigation program is accurate maps and quick, accurate routing. Mapopolis does that. (and no, I don't get a commission! :p )

Some other comments: Most CF cards work in the PCMCIA adapters well. I suspect a CF GPS would as well. If all your GPSing will be in the vehicle, you don't need a wired one, but if you hike or boat and want GPS, I would recommend against taking the Axim with you. It has zero protection from the elements. Most of the stand alone GPS units are at least water resistant, if not waterproof.

thanks for all the info, mainly on Xmap I was all prepared to purchase it just because they say it does all this and is writen for PPC. I may just have to bite the bullet and try mapopolis out. I dont wish to repeat my excesive spending on crap like I had with screen protectors. I found spend the money wisely and dont get cheap about it.
