Here's my homemade unit. It doesn't look bulky and take up a lot of space when the Axim is not on it. Mine is for GPS use so the location near the windshield and side window helps too. I haven't had the suction cup lose suction yet but I do check it periodically.

I have that mount.

-The trick to prevent it from shaking is to have part of the axim rest on the dashboard.

-Its been mounted for 2 months now, and no sign of the suction weakening. Its surprisingly strong

-I would suggest this solution vs the cupholder because it is closer to eye-level, you can safely take quick glances without taking your eyes completely off the road.

1) But doesn't that give the Axim a good jolt if you hit a bump?

2) And that wouldn't work in a minivan or similar vehicle with the extremely deep & slanted windshield, right?

Mine is mounted in an SUV, a 2002 toyota Highlander. I dont know how it will fit a minivan, but i believe Arkon makes an identical product with an extra long neck.

Mac - nice ride! Do all Cobra's come with a gauge on the pillar or do you have something "special" under the hood? Also, I noticed your radar detector. Is it a Valentine? With my job having me on the road more and more, I'm looking at getting one soon.

How reliable are the vent mounts? Semsons is including one with a GPS purchase right now.

FWIW, I wrote to Semson's and they explained the differences between their Generic Mount
and their
Arkon Mount :

(quote)

1. Generic Mount

a. Works with slim PDAs such as iPAQ and Toshiba but not with Dell or iPAQ
with sleeve.
b. China made suction cup
c. 30 cm flexible arm

2. Arkon Mount

a. Works with any PDA including iPAQ with sleeve
b. German made suction cup
c. 8" flexible arm

(end quote)

Note that the generic one does not work with the Axim. Good thing I didn't buy it :)

has anyone seen a mount that has side by side PDA and cellphone holders? I'd like to mount my AXIM next to my eTrex (about the same size as a phone) and connect the two together with a cable from www.thesupplynet.com (available soon)

[Even though I am based in Denmark - you might want to check out this company - their products are usually great

www.brodit.se

rgds
Trident

-----------------

You may want to try this mount. I recently installed one in my car and I like it.

1. It is highly configurable to the type of car or dashboard or type of mount you want.

2. It is neater to look at without having a gooseneck style of mount in your windshield...and a 'dashboard mount' would have a look that resembles the current pop-up style 'in-dash' nav system of expensive cars these days.

3. It holds your PDA quite securely even during bumpy rides so you don't worry about breaking your axim. They have mounts for cell phones, too.

4. The mount can be removed and re-installed if you want (of course this is always not recommended as you may loosen the attachment points) but at least you have that option unlike the sticky mounts.

In the USA, it is distributed by Pro-Clip. Check out this website...

I bought the Arkon knock-off (about $10 less) from a site sponsor. It has a regular power plug to USB, versus Serial to USB that the Arkon uses. I bought the longer Arkon suction cup (14") and it holds like there is no tomorrow.

This picture is from my SUV which already has nav, and I use the device in my roadster, but I didn't want to take the cover off to show how I connect the unit.

My SUV has a softer ride than my roadster, but I mount it the same way. I drove all day without balancing the gooseneck on my dash and it held its position without problems and the suction was still as tight as when I started.

Some pretty impressive looking mounts/holder setups on the pics/links here. ;)

Agree with you trident and tdbear that the pro-clip re the Brodit holder.

So been trying to get Brodit mount for my Axim for some time now and its only very recently that Sweden based Brodit www.brodit.se brought out a holder dedicated for the Axim.

Anyway I ordered the pro-clip and Brodit holder yesterday for 45quid. Solid but elegant and a real quality setup.

Elet...

What an interesting bartar system... 45 squids for a clip. Squid can be tasty if prepared properly. Watch out for those suckers though.

:)

I use the Axim in my roadster, not my Lexus, although Mapopolis is more up-to-date. The car cover was on my roadster and I didn't want to take it off for the above photo.

I just bought a new mount for the roadster. Arkon now has the gooseneck mount that attaches to the seat bolt available.

Here is a photo:
