Thanks JakeRich - I guess I'll wait a little till situations will be more clear. Or maybe till RoyalTek will incorporate SIRF III into their models. Thanks again.

Looking at a stream for awhile through GPSInfo, it appears there is no WAAS lock, as you assumed.

I still think it's an amazing unit, but I would have liked a WAAS capable unit if it actually provided more resolution. Especially since I DO use it for geocaching. In my tests, though, it brought me within a few feet of the target cache in a few locations. I guess that's what really matters.

Got this email from Joe Kee at buyGPSnow.com when asked about the WAAS capability of the system:

"Here is what we heard back from GlobalSat:

"It's because SiRF didn't release the firmware for WAAS enabled by default for star III chipset so far, and there's nothing to do with the quality of our BT-338."

I am going to cancel your order and change our website to remove WAAS capability."

Good for Joe and buyGPSnow to adhere to some 'truth in advertising.'

So it looks like until the SiRF WAAS firmware is released, none of the new SiRF Star III units will be WAAS enabled.

Accuracy of BT-338 w/o WAAS

Sorry for the ignorance or lack of knowledge about GPS , but isn’t the reported 10 meters, 2D RMS mean 95% of the time the BT-338 is only off by 10 meters. Isn’t that more reliable and accurate than xTrak2. For example, RBT-1000XT reports in their specs 10 meters RMS. Doesn't that mean it is only accurate around 65% of the time.

The BT-338 still sounds impressive. Or do I not understand RMS vs 2D RMS correctly.

No, any non-WAAS unit will get the same fix accuracy because the accuracy is affected by local conditions that cannot be calculated without the Differential GPS data provided by WAAS. The RBT and the 338 have exactly the same fix accuracy. The difference between them is that the 338 is more sensitive to weak signals than the RBT. Once the signal is received, they both have the exact same accuracy of fix. Thre is no difference between RMS and 2D RMS. The 2D is an attempt by GlobalSat to say that altitude (the third D) is not included in that accuracy figure. RBT doesn't include that disclaimer since most users only care about lat/lon anyway. Altitude has problems of its own that go far beyond WAAS/non-WAAS.
