Farm land mapping/area software?
Hey folks,
It's been months since I've been back to Aximsite, but I knew if anyone could help me, it'd be you people.
I need some software that can assist in marking out farm land. I want to be able to go to the 4 corners (or more) and get GPS readings. Then I want the software, either PC or PPC based to figure out the area of the land. Perhaps this same software could draw the shapes on screen.
I will use my Axim to get the waypoints, but I need your help in tracking down the software I need.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Thanks Lawnman,
I checked it out, but it says "In the Geo version of GPS Tuner you are able to calculate area and perimeter (and export the shape in DXF format)."
What is Geo version?
Mike

Hmmmm... GPSTuner looks okay, any other software options available for perimeter/area plotting?

Not sure if it calculates area or not, but check out FUGAWI.com it is a high end ( and not terribly priced ) mapping software package. I am sure they have a product that can do it just dont know if they do it on the PPC yet.

If you just get the coordinates from your gps in any program, you can use those to find the area. you will just need to figure out haw far a degree is or whatever those numbers are it gives you :)
EDIT: here's some useful info...
1° of latitude = 69.17mi
1° of longitude is (69.17 X cosine(latitude))
For instance.... At 60 latitude, a degree of longitude = 34.50mi (69.17mi X 0.5000, the cosine of 60).
Confusing, yes. $48, no.

If you go to http://www.wcrl.ars.usda.gov/cec/java/lat-long.htm they have a calculator that will tell you the distance between two coordinates. Might be a lot more convenient than trying to remember to multiply the Lat by the COS for a degree of longitude and again, saves $48. Are you going to capture altitude also? If you did this in a grid pattern over your property you could then plot the X,Y, and Z coordinates off of your GPS and probably use a freeware plotting program to plot the picture you generate. I can't remember if Excel has a 3-D chart in its program or not. Anyway, good luck and let us know how you fair with it.

All good stuff, but if the field is irregularly shaped and he's searching for both perimeter and area, the math to do that will be lengthy. Sure, lots of division of the area into rectangles and triangles will eventually cover the property but you have to consider that as opposed to the $48 investment that does it automatically. I guess it depends on how often this survey will be required.

You're right JakeRich. I'm not sure its worth saving $48 bucks on either. Just depends on how much time you have to spend on a really neat science fair project. Actually, if it was me, I'd just go dig out the survey that should of been performed when the title to the land transferred the last time and get the dimensions off of that. Unless you've sold a section or subdivided it (at which time a new survey should have been performed) then that should be reasonably accurate.

I guess it's because I'm a broke college student majoring in engineering. $48 or 5 minutes of calculations.... I think you can see where I'm coming from :D
It does look like a cool program though :)

In fact, I don't ever remember a time not being broke.
