Garmin GPS 10 - seeking details
Hi, I am new to this forum and to the Dell Axim (x30)... So far the Axim is great (as is this forum!).
I have used the Garmin Street Pilot III for just over three years now and am considering switching to the GPS 10 to use with my new Axim. I have done a lot of searching for more detailed information about the Que software and have not been able to come up with much.
Here is some information I would like:
1. Is there a limited number of routes/waypoints that can be saved? Or is the limit the memory storage of the PDA?
2. Can waypoints be saved right to the PDA or must they be saved in the laptop then sent via a sync?
3. Is there a one-touch 'home' feature as in other current GPS systems?
4. Is the voice volume good enough to be able to listen to music? I realize this is more a PDA than GPS question...
Of those of you who currently use the GPS 10, have any of you migrated from a full GPS model such as the Street Pilot? What have you found? Would you have preferred another full model, or are you happy with this new type of component?
Sorry for all the questions. I realize this is a new product but I am frustrated with the lack of information I have been able to find.
Thanks so much!

Thank you Kyotech! Also, can you recommend a dealer to go through to purchase the gps 10?
Thanks!

I bought from Darrel at www.tvnav.com but paid $20 more. Not sure but there was a place that a few people bought from at $199 plus shipping.

It was adventurestation.com:

Got mine in 4 days!
SharnAtlanta, you're right that the info out there is limited on this unit but if you search the forums, IMHO, you'll find, in general, less bugs reported with it than other GPS units. Here's another forum of happy GPS 10 users:

Good luck!

being an axim owner using ppc format, you should stay away from garmin
get yourself a bluetooth gps and go with other brand/make of software such as tomtom, delorme or iguidance
i have x5 and iguidance

daniel, please explain why we should stay away from Garmin if we use the PPC format? I have the Dell Axim x50v with the Garmin GPS 10 Deluxe Package and have had great success with it, as wall as others here on the forum. Please give examples of why the Gramin is not good on a PPC format.
Thanks Greg

i had a quick look on gps 10 deluxe.
it seems that garmin is sticking to the industrial protocol of bluetooth.
that should be ok unlike practically all the other garmin products which specify only garmin map software.
and likewise no other map program can run on their hardware as well
garmin has the dominance in the gps market and their main business is in package deal gps, cpu and software altogether and all proprietary
all except for the pricier model like 2620 have very little headroom for upgrade or update because of proprietory memory card (like memory in single digit) and map program
in your case it is an exception as gps 10 deluxe is no more than an independent peripheral
i have to say we have made good choice on buying axim.
and i think garmin can see writing on the wall that ppc or even palm is the way to go for gps rather than proprietary gps unit they have been selling.

Well, since this is a Garmin GPS 10 thread, I have to point out that your "quick look" was insufficient; you seem to be uninformed and completely wrong. Any PPC GPS software works with the Garmin GPS 10. Also, unlike some bluetooth GPS units, the Garmin GPS 10 is highly configurable via their bluetooth utility software. As for their "proprietary" Palm GPS unit, there are many happy customers who like their superior maps.

as i said garmin gps 10 seems to be ok as it is a gps peripheral
avid axim fan would have stayed away just on price alone not to mention the risk of going into garmin's proprietory trap
while i am typing this i see deluo is selling their bluetooth at $99
did you get your gps 10 @ at price?
stay away from their other proprietory hardware and software which can only be used for garmin products
there are numerous complaint about the lack of upgrade/update path (in the newsgroup alt.satellite.gps) unless you pay big dollar
for 50v user, it is even no brainer as a c f gps unit would have been cheaper as the gps and axim is merged into one unit drawing power from one source

can you elaborate on their superior maps?
garmin do not make their maps at all .
they got their map data from navtec
they use different gui though.

??? Cheaper, but not practical at all. The whole point of a stand-alone bluetooth GPS unit is so that you don't have to hold the PDA itself in a position to get satellites. You can place the magnetic GPS unit on your backpack, on your car dashboard or roof, or on your plane or boat cowling and read your PDA with ease.
Besides, drawing from two separate power sources makes far more sense: 10-12 hours of battery life on the GPS 10, 4-6 on the Axim X50v (with the larger battery). Having a CF GPS instead on the X50v would be a crippling power drain.
I still think that the combination of the Garmin GUI, street maps and topos is hard to beat.
Since the thread was started by someone wanting information on the GPS 10, I don't understand why you are here to bash other Garmin products.

geocham
you have some point
i knew very little about gps 10 when i posted the first answer
all i knew was to tell people to avoid garmin
ok after further digging up the pros and cons: and i can tell you why garmin got this far to condescend even to cater to ppc need
i want to ask you two questions:
how much you paid extra for the map program called city select ( a stripped down version of MapSource City Navigator) which is packaged with gps 10?
how much do you have to pay extra for garmin's complete MapSource City Navigator?
well they do not even sell you the full version at all unless you buy their gps hardware (another package of at least over $600)
after you have researched into answering these two questions and you will know why i was bashing them
gps 10 is no better and likely no worse than the BT gps available in the market
>Since the thread was started by someone wanting information on the GPS 10, I don't understand why you are here to bash other Garmin products.
now i think you understand my reasoning to alert axim users of the downside of using garmin tricky package

A total of US$199 for the GPS 10 including the North America City Select CDs.
It is far more configurable than many BT GPS units. You can read some very good threads on configuring the GPS 10 here:

[QUOTE=geochem]

your axim lasts say 3 hours of gps usage non-stop with its batt power alone
in car use, its power will not be interrupted at all
outside the car (for hiking or pedestrian) , the advantage of an one-piece non-BT gps is even more evident
if i expect to use gps outside a vehicle for more than 3 hours, i have one of those $10 batt extender for my x5
the thread started of with a question for using BT for x30 as it is not a dual slot pda anyway
so bt was the only way almost
bt has its advantage particularly for vehicle with heated front windshield
